csssaints.com) – After a weather delay, the St. Scholastica women's tennis team cruised over Belhaven University (Miss.) in the afternoon, but fell in a close match to Dickinson College (Pa.) under the lights on Monday.
CSS 6, Belhaven 0 (BOX SCORE)
The match was delayed by nearly three hours due to rain and the location changed to the USTA Center on the clay courts.
CSS cruised in doubles action against the Blazers (0-8). The No. 1 team of
Katelyn Rice (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) and
Elizabeth Fink (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Century HS) won 8-2. The No. 2 team of
Elise Hauer (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and
Alexia Brascugli (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) prevailed 8-6. Finally, the No. 3 team of
Sarah Coryell (Golden Valley, Minn./Armstrong HS) and
Emma Bartels (Roseville, Minn./Mounds View HS (Minn.-Duluth)) blanked their opponent 8-0.
Only three singles were played to completion due to limited court availability and time.
Daniela Rojas (Monterrey, Mexico/Universidad Tecmilenio) won in a third set super-breaker at the No. 1 spot by scores of 6-3, 5-7, (10-5). Coryell won at the No. 5 spot by scores of 6-2, 6-0. The final winner was
Serena Hutson (Meridian, Idaho/Bishop Kelly HS) at the No. 6 spot 6-1, 6-2.
Dickinson 5, CSS 4 (BOX SCORE)
With the temperatures dropping and the daylight gone, the Saints fell in a close decision to the Red Devils by a score of 5-4.
Dickinson (2-2) won two of the three doubles matches to begin. The No. 3 team of Coryell and Bartels won their second match of the day by an 8-3 score. The No. 2 team of Hauer and Brascugli dropped a close match 9-7.
In singles play, the Red Devils sealed the dual victory quickly by winning the top three flights in straight sets. However, the Saints still finished strong as Brascugli won at the No. 6 spot 6-3, 6-4. Coryell also won in straight sets at the No. 5 spot 6-2, 7-5. The final match to conclude on the night was Fink winning in a super-breaker at the No. 4 spot 6-4, 7-5, (10-8).
