-Tykhonenko wins both matches at No. 1 singles
ORLANDO, Fla. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team dropped both of its matches on Monday on the clay courts at the USTA Center.
Belhaven 5, CSS 4 (BOX SCORE)
After the match was delayed due to rain, the Saints and Blazers (4-4) battled for nearly six hours on limited court space with the final singles match deciding the dual.
Belhaven had the edge after doubles play, winning two of the three matches. The No. 2 team of
Trace Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) and
Jack Kearney (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) were the lone CSS winners by a score of 8-6.
The top of the Saints singles lineup brought CSS back as
Serhii Tykhonenko (Kiev, Ukraine/Lyceum #100 "Podil") at No. 1 won by scores of 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) and
Elliot Schneider (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) at No. 2 won 6-1, 6-0. Kearney kept the Saints alive at the No. 4 spot, winning 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 as the dual match score stood at 4-4.
The match came down to the No. 6 singles match where
Connor Croft (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) won the first set 6-4. However, his opponent took the second set 6-1 meaning the match would be decided by a third set super-breaker. Belhaven would prevail in the super-breaker 10-7 to take it 5-4.
Dickinson 7, CSS 2 (BOX SCORE)
The Saints didn't have much of a break heading into the nightcap against Dickinson College (Pa.).
CSS won one doubles match as the duo of Schneider and Combs came out on top 8-2 at the No. 1 spot. It was also the top spot in singles play that got the lone St. Scholastica win as Tykhonenko won his third straight singles match by scores of 7-5, 7-6 (7-3).
CSS dropped the rest of the singles matches to the Red Devils (3-2) in straight sets.
