Two Late Goals Not Enough for Men’s Hockey

Notables
-CSS didn't score a goal until third period
-Saints have allowed at least one power play goal in each of the last five games
-Sabres clinch the No. 2 seed with the win over CSS
-Saints now need to win vs. Lawrence tomorrow to clinch the No. 3 seed.

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica men's hockey team surrendered the first three goals of the game to No. 14 Marian University (Wis.), got back within a goal in the third period, but then gave up a short-handed goal in a 4-2 loss Friday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.

The Action
The first and second periods were not favorable for the Saints. The first goal came six and a half minutes into the first period after a tripping penalty gave the Sabres (17-6-1, 11-6-0 NCHA) a man advantage. The goal came from Jake Howie. The Saints got a power play opportunity late in the first period, but could not capitalize on it. In the second period, the Sabres scored twice more to make the score 3-0.

In the third period, the Saints came out hard and managed to finally put a point on the board. Dustin Cordeiro (Kitchener, Ontario/Elliot Lake Secondary School (Cochrane-NOJHL)), assisted by Ryan Cooper (New Westminster, British Columbia/New Westminster Secondary (Dauphin-MJHL)) was the player to make the score 3-1. Following the scoring play for the Saints, a Marian player was called for charging, a major penalty which put him in the box for five minutes. Thirty seconds after the penalty was called, Kyle Star (Langley, British, Columbia/Brookswood (Trail Smoke-BCHL)) netted a shot for the power play goal, assisted by Mark Whiteley (Surrey, British Columbia/Holy Cross HS (Marian University)) and Nolan Ross (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances HS (Fort Frances-SIJHL)) to get within one goal at 3-2. The penalized Sabres skater stayed in the box, despite the Saints goal, to serve the remainder of his five minute major penalty. Even though the Saints were up a man, the Sabres got a chance on a breakaway and scored a short-handed goal to extend their lead once again. The rest of the third period saw some physical, high-paced play, but neither team would add another point to the board and the players shook hands with a final score of 4-2 in favor of Marian.

Goaltending
Forbes Ploszaj (Gilbert, Arizona/Gilbert HS (Aberdeen-NAHL)) was between the pipes for CSS, making 16 saves on 20 shots faced. Hunter Vorva got the win for Marian making 34 saves on 36 shots.
