DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica men's hockey team ended the regular season on a high-note Saturday night with a 4-1 win over Lawrence University (Wis.). With the win, they clinched the No. 3 seed for the Harris Cup Playoffs - a spot the Vikings could have overtaken with a win or a tie versus CSS.
The Action
The Vikings only goal came early on in the first period. Lane King scored for Lawrence on the first power play of the game, just twelve seconds shy of when the Saints would have been back to full strength. The Saints answered two minutes later, thanks to Cole Golka (Ardrossan, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Dryden Ice Dogs-SIJHL)), assisted by Nate Pionk (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS (Minot-NAHL)) and Kyle Star (Langley, British, Columbia/Brookswood (Trail Smoke-BCHL)) to tie things up at 1-1. Not long after that, the Saints added one more goal to the score board, on another power play when Jordan Fralich (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall School (Bismarck-NAHL)) beat the goalie on a shot, assisted by Pionk and Parker Mismash (Edina, Minn./Edina HS (Minnesota Magicians-NAHL)) to give CSS the 2-1 lead. There was one more power play chance for the Saints, but they only managed two shots on goal in the two minutes and the teams headed to the locker rooms with CSS up by one.
In the second period, the game saw more physical play. Less than thirty seconds into play, a holding penalty was called on the Vikings and the Saints took advantage of the extra skater. Davis Ross (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances HS (Fort Frances-SIJHL)) scored on the power play and was assisted by Mismash and Golka to make the score 3-1. In total, the period had seven power plays, four for the Saints and three for the Vikings, but all but one would see a goal.
The third period was the most physical of all. Tensions were high with playoff spots on the line and 12 penalties were called in the final period alone. The only goal came five seconds short of the final buzzer with an empty-netter from Seth Chumley (Cambridge, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's (Minnesota Iron Rangers-SIJHL)), with Fralich getting the assist, to give the game its final score of 4-1.
Goaltending
Nick Trenciansky (Vancouver, British Columbia/Holy Cross Regional HS (Kindersley-SJHL)) took the win for the Saints, making 24 saves on 25 shots. For the Vikings, Greg Procopio was in net, making 32 saves on 35 shots faced.
