Nordic Skiing Begins Competition at NMU Open

ISHPEMING, Mich. (csssaints.com) – Due to illness plaguing both the St. Scholastica men's and women's nordic ski teams, the Saints had just six members competing on Sunday in the classic races of the Northern Michigan University Open to begin their seasons.
 
The men's team had four skiers competing in the 15km classic race and were led by newcomer Emil Book Bratbak (Lillehammer, Norway/Lillehammer), who finished 10th overall in a time of 44:22. Junior Jack Christianson (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) was next in 14th with a time of 45:41. Another newcomer Hannes Stenstrom (Are, Sweden/Are Skidgymnasium) was 16th with a time of 46:02. The final Saint competing was sophomore Ryan Steger (Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS), who placed 26th in a time of 48:17.
 
Host Northern Michigan University swept the top five spots led by Zak Ketterson with a time of 41:05.
 
The women's team had just two skiers competing in the 10km classic with junior Nicole Gilman (Manitowish Waters, Wis./Lakeland Union HS) leading the way with a time of 36:16. Senior Greta Jenkins (Palmer, Alaska/Colony HS) was 12th in a finishing time of 36:56.
 
Michigan Tech University's Sarah Goble won the event with a time of 33:16.

The Saints will have skiers compete again next weekend in Houghton, Michigan in the Michigan Tech JNQ.
