SUPERIOR, Wis. (
csssaints.com) -- The No. 10 St. Scholastica men's hockey team opened up the University of Wisconsin-Superior Showdown with a 4-3 loss to No. 13 Marian University on Saturday.
The Scoring
The Saints had three power play opportunities in the first period, and out-shot the Sabres 15-6, but was unable to get on the board.
The scoring was finally opened with 8:44 left to go in the second period, when Marian found the net. That marked the first time this season CSS did not score first. The Saints responded one minute and 50 seconds later with an unassisted goal by
Carson Rose (Surrey, British Columbia/Elgin Park Secondary (Weyburn-SJHL)).
But Marian (7-4-2) went on the power play with 3:30 left in the period on a St. Scholastica major and was able to capitalize once on the major and make it 2-1.
Three minutes into the third period Marian increased its lead to 3-1. The Saints responded with an unassisted goal by
Seth Chumley (Cambridge, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's (Minnesota Iron Rangers-SIJHL)) to make it 3-2 with over 15 minutes remaining.
CSS was able to tie the game at 3-3 with 5:01 left in the game after
Michael Talbot (Anoka, Minn./Anoka HS (Minot-NAHL)) set up
Mike Nolan (Aldergrove, British Columbia/Yale Secondary (Fresno-WSHL)). However, 36 seconds later the Sabres regained the lead to make it 4-3.
CSS pulled its goalie in the final minutes of the game and had two power-plays in the final four minutes, but was not able to find an equalizer. Marian came out on top 4-3.

Rose, Chumley, and Nolan all had a goal apiece for the Saints.
Nick Trenciansky (Vancouver, British Columbia/Holy Cross Regional HS (Kindersley-SJHL)) stopped 24 of the 28 shots he faced in net for the Saints.

Connor Blanck led Marian in points with three assists. Anthony Orubor, Blaine Caton, Lane Valimont and Clay Cross all scored for the Sabres.
Hunter Vorva stopped 37 of the 40 shots he faced in net for the Sabres.
