DUBUQUE, Iowa (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team ended its weekend with a 86-75 hard-fought loss against the University of Dubuque at the Loras College Tip-Off Classic on Saturday afternoon.
How it Happened
Dubuque (3-2) commenced play with a point off a free throw followed by two more from a jumper within the two minutes of the match-up. The Saints responded with a three-pointer of their own from
Collin Anderson (Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) to tie the game. Though the Saints stayed close behind the Spartans, they would not take the lead until about five minutes into the game with a score of 11-9. They would keep their lead until there was nine minutes left of the first half. After, the teams would battle back-and-forth exchanging the lead until the final five minutes when the Spartans went on a 10-0 run to create an eight-point spread. Dubuque maintained its lead and went into the second half with a 45-36 advantage over St. Scholastica.
The Saints rallied to come within four with 12 minutes left of the second half, but Dubuque never let up. St. Scholastica's next four points came from free throws that were scattered over the course of five minutes, bringing the score to 69-60. Once again, scoring was back-and-forth, but the Spartans maintained at least a nine-point margin.
With 3:37 left on the clock, St. Scholastica took a timeout that allowed them to regroup and score back-to-back buckets to come within six. However, the Spartans' offense was too much for the Saints to overcome, as they would go on to shoot 60-percent from the perimeter in the second half allowing them to ultimately collect the 86-75 win.
