DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica men's hockey team downed Concordia University Wisconsin on Friday night at Mars Lakeview Arena by a final score of 3-2, marking the seventh straight victory for the Saints.
The Action
The first period saw a strong start from the Saints. Five minutes in and Carson Rose (Surrey, British Columbia/Elgin Park Secondary (Weyburn-SJHL)) hit a goal for CSS, assisted by Chase Springman (Elk River, Minn./Elk River HS (Minot-NAHL)) and Sam Williams (Winnipeg, Manitoba/River East Collegiate (Melville-SJHL)). Less than 10 minutes later, on the first power play of the game, Kyle Star (Langley, British, Columbia/Brookswood (Trail Smoke-BCHL)) put one in the net with the assists going to Mark Whiteley (Surrey, British Columbia/Holy Cross HS (Marian University)) and Brett Radford (Campbell River, British Columbia/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Canmore-AJHL)).
The second period began with CSS killing off the remaining minute of a penalty carried over from the first period. The Falcons would not score, but late in the period CUW made their move. Two goals from Concordia, coming within three minutes of one another and one on a power play, tied things up 2-2 with just under four minutes left in the period. This brought the teams to the game's second intermission. The Falcons controlled the period out-shooting the Saints 16-5.
A minute and a half into the third, the Saints got an opportunity at a power play goal, but they would not capitalize on it. The teams were evenly matched until the halfway point of the period when after matching minors were called to make it 4-on-4 Max Mettler (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Minot-NAHL)) put one between the pipes to give the Saints the lead 3-2. He was assisted on the go-ahead goal by Nate Pionk (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS (Minot-NAHL)) and Carson Rose (Surrey, British Columbia/Elgin Park Secondary (Weyburn-SJHL)). The teams battled it out for the rest of the game, but ultimately the Saints came out on top.
Goalkeeping
Forbes Ploszaj (Gilbert, Arizona/Gilbert HS (Aberdeen-NAHL)) collected the win for the Saints, making 32 saves - his second-most in any game this season. Nick Malvin was in net for Concordia, making 26 saves.
