DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) –
Jordan Fralich (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall School (Bismarck-NAHL))'s power-play goal with less than nine minutes remaining in regulation extended the St. Scholastica men's hockey team's unbeaten streak to nine and winning streak to eight with a 3-2 victory over the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Saturday at Mars Lakeview Arena.
The Action
When these two teams first met in Milwaukee earlier this season, they combined for nearly 200 penalty minutes. Today the teams combined for just 32, but penalties played a role late.
St. Scholastica changed the scoreboard first when
Carson Rose (Surrey, British Columbia/Elgin Park Secondary (Weyburn-SJHL)) netted a goal for the third straight game with 7:30 remaining in the opening period.
Kyle Star (Langley, British, Columbia/Brookswood (Trail Smoke-BCHL)) recorded his sixth assist in the last four games and
Sam Williams (Winnipeg, Manitoba/River East Collegiate (Melville-SJHL)) had an assist for the second straight game.
The Raiders (8-8-1, 4-6-0 NCHA) responded three minutes later with a Zach Simpson goal to make it 1-1 at the first intermission.
Only one goal was scored in the second period and that belonged to MSOE as Eric Tien scored unassisted to give the Raiders a 2-1 lead at the second intermission.
After failing to convert on a power-play early in the third, the Saints found the equalizer on a
Parker Mismash (Edina, Minn./Edina HS (Minnesota Magicians-NAHL)) re-direct seven minutes into the period to make it 2-2. Fralich and
Davis Ross (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances HS (Fort Frances-SIJHL)) had the assists.
Three penalties were then called in the span of two minutes with two coming against the Raiders. That gave the Saints a 5-on-3 opportunity and despite not scoring with the two skater advantage, CSS scored shortly after on the 5-on-4 when Fralich carried the puck into the zone and put it on goal which got past the goaltender to make it 3-2 with 8:34 remaining.
Nick Trenciansky (Vancouver, British Columbia/Holy Cross Regional HS (Kindersley-SJHL)) was credited with the assist, his third of the season.
MSOE would bring on the extra attacker with 1:56 remaining, but Trenciansky would need to make only one save as the Saints blocked four shots in the final minutes to prevail 3-2.
Goaltending
Trenciansky made 19 saves to improve to 5-1 this season. Zach Woodman had 25 saves in the loss for the Raiders.
