HANCOCK, Mich. (csssaints.com) -- The St. Scholastica men's basketball team defeated Finlandia University (Mich.) by a score of 87-58 on Wednesday behind double-double efforts by Brandon Newman (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) and Jarod Wilken (Annandale, Minn./Annandale HS).
 
First Half
The Lions (2-10) opened the scoring off a 3-pointer, before CSS added a 3-pointer through Newman. That would be the only Finlandia lead of the game. CSS then went on an eight-point run to make it 8-3 in favor of the Saints. Moments later Finlandia had leveled the score at 11-11 until Wilken added a jumper and Sam Thompson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) added a 3-pointer to give the Saints a five-point lead.
 
A Joe Stark (Hayward, Wis./Hayward HS) 3-pointer extended their lead to seven. With three minutes remaining, the Saints had earned their biggest lead of the half, 15 points capped off by a layup from Wilken.
 
The Lions reduced CSS' lead to six with 30 seconds remaining, but Colin Anderson added a 3-pointer to give the Saints a nine-point lead heading into halftime.
 
Second Half
One minute into the second half CSS had earned a 14-point lead after a jumper by Dylan Zimmerman (Elmdale, Minn./Upsala HS) and a 3-pointer by Thompson. The Saints would lead by at least 10 points for the rest of the game.
 
CSS led by as much as 30 before winning by a final score of 87-56.
 
Top Performances for CSS
Five Saints reached double figures as Anderson led with 15 points, including 10 points in the second half. Wilken had 14 points and a team-high 13 rebounds for a double-double. Newman recorded 11 points and a career-high 13 assists. Thompson added 11 points.
 
Top Performances for the Opponent
Myles Ellington had 14 points and Geoff Smart added 13 points.
