DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com)- The St. Scholastica men's soccer team beat out Bethel University 3-1 Saturday in a non-conference meeting at Saints Field. The Saints had not faced the Royals since the 2005 season.
First Half
Both teams were evenly matched, with only one attempted shot by St. Scholastica that went wide in the first 12 minutes.
Luke Buckton (Bath, England/Writhlington School) shot the first shot on goal, which was blocked a Bethel defenseman.
Buckton would get in three shots on goal before
Jacob Carson (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley HS) shot his first, which would be stopped by the Bethel goalkeeper.
Later in the half, after some confusion around the net, the Royals would beat the keeper and score, putting themselves on the board at 1-0. About eight minutes later, Carson would score on a free kick into the top corner of the far post, tying up the game 1-1.
The rest of this half was close, with the Saints allowing Bethel's second and last shot on goal of the game before time on the clock ran out. The score would be 1-1 going into the second half.
Second Half
Two minutes in, with the assist from
Darby Henderson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS), Buckton would send a successful drive to the net to score his second goal of the game. With the score at 2-1, the Saints began to dominate the field.
73 minutes into the game, Buckton scored his second goal of the game, with the assist from
Alex Dodd (Lakeville, Minn./Burnsville HS) and
Noah Hooey (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS). With this goal, the score was at 3-1, giving the Saints a wider lead. Bethel would fight hard but would be unable to get another shot on goal. With the Saints' shutdown of Bethel, the final score would be 3-1.
Buckton had a total of six shots on goal, Carson had three and both Henderson and
Armin Bobaric (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) had two shots on goal. CSS goalkeeper
Sandy Davidson-Hunt (Kenora, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) saved one out of two shots on goal he faced.
