MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica men's soccer team opened Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play on Wednesday in Minneapolis with a 6-1 victory against North Central University (Minn.).
The Action
The first half saw even competition between both squads. The first goal came for the Saints in the 14th minute from Alex Dodd (Lakeville, Minn./Burnsville HS), his first of the season, to put CSS on the board. The next goal came with just 10 minutes left in the half, this time from North Central's Josué Boutoul on a penalty kick to tie the score at 1-1, which would remain unchanged for the final minutes of the first half.
After halftime, the game was dominated by St. Scholastica. Six minutes in, the Saints took the lead thanks to a goal from Luke Buckton (Bath, England/Writhlington School), assisted by Darby Henderson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS), and never looked back. Just over one minute later, the Buckton/Henderson duo struck again, this time with Henderson getting the goal and the assist going to Buckton to make the score 3-1 in favor of the Saints. Another goal came in the 59th minute from Armin Bobaric (Andover, Minn./Andover HS), with the assist coming from Buckton to put CSS up 4-1. The fourth goal in 15 minutes for the Saints was yet another contribution from Buckton, his second goal of the game. The last score change came on a final goal from the Saints thanks to Juan Ochoa (Chihuahua, Mexico/Prepa Tec) to give the game its final score of 6-1.Â
Notable Performances
For the Saints, Buckton led the offense with two assists and two goals, scoring with both of the shots he put on goal. Henderson contributed an impressive offensive game as well, with a goal and an assist. Sandy Davidson-Hunt (Kenora, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) got the win between the pipes for CSS, but sophomore Corey Bulheller (Middleton-by-Wirksworth, England/Highfields Secondary School (Bacone)) got some time in the net as well. The two of them only faced a single shot on goal during the game.Â
For the Rams, Boutouli had the single shot on goal which resulted in the only goal. Gabe Hartwig was in the goal for North Central and saved seven of the 13 shots he faced.Â
