First Period Fury
After leading for most of Friday night's contest, only to let it slip away in the final moments, the Saints came out with a statement on Saturday. It was Senior Night for the Saints and the seniors got things rolling early.
CSS scored its first goal two minutes and 36 seconds into the game on senior
Kyle Beaulieu (White Rock, British Columbia/Earl Marriott (St. Norbert))'s second goal of the season.
Max Mettler (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Minot-NAHL)) and
Kyle Star (Langley, British, Columbia/Brookswood (Trail Smoke-BCHL)) had the assists. Only 21 seconds later, it was senior
Josh Hansen (Chilliwack, British Columbia/Unity Christian School (Chilliwack-BCHL) ) extending the Saints lead to 2-0. Seniors
Brandon Millin (Port Moody, British Columbia/Heritage Woods HS (Notre Dame Hounds-SJHL) ) and
Steven Phee (Balzac, Alberta/George McDougall HS (Canmore-AJHL) ) were credited with the assists.
Still in the first,
Mark Whiteley (Surrey, British Columbia/Holy Cross HS (Marian University)) made it 3-0 Saints midway thru the period thanks to assists from
Sam Williams (Winnipeg, Manitoba/River East Collegiate (Melville-SJHL) ) and
Kale Derkson (Regina, Saskatchewan/Sheldon Williams Collegiate/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Notre Dame-SJHL)). It was the seniors again striking for the final tally of the period with Millin recording his 13
th goal of the season with five minutes to go, making it 4-0 CSS at the first intermission. Phee and Hansen had the assists.
St. Scholastica out-shot Concordia 12-1 in the opening period.
Saints Hold On
The Saints extended the lead to 5-0 with 5:30 remaining in the second period on freshman
Brett Radford (Campbell River, British Columbia/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Canmore-AJHL))'s 10
th goal of the season. Senior
Derek Sutliffe (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School (Langley Rivermen-BCHL) ) and fellow freshman
Davis Ross (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances HS (Fort Frances-SIJHL)) had the assists.
The Falcons would try to get back in it with a goal at 32 seconds left in the second period and then another goal 24 seconds into the third period. Concordia would out-shoot the Saints 13-2 in the third period.
The Falcons then made it a 5-3 game with under two minutes remaining and would pull their goaltender, but the Saints would hang on for the 5-3 victory.
