DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) -- The St. Scholastica men's hockey team did not trail until there was five seconds remaining in overtime in its 3-2 loss to Concordia University Wisconsin on Friday in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play.
The Action
The first period went by without a single goal. The period showed that both teams were equally matched with St. Scholastica only being outshot by CUW 10-6.Â
CSS got on the board with a
Mike Nolan (Aldergrove, British Columbia/Yale Secondary (Fresno-WSHL)) goal, with the assist from
Connor Faupel (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Century HS (UW-Superior)), less than three minutes into the second period. However, six minutes later, CUW would sneak one in the net, tying up the game 1-1.
Just over three minutes later
Nolan Ross (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances HS (Fort Frances-SIJHL)) put the Saints back in front 2-1 with assists by
Kyle Star (Langley, British, Columbia/Brookswood (Trail Smoke-BCHL)) and
Kristofer McKinzie (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall School (Minnesota Magicians-NAHL)). St. Scholastica would then soon after give the Falcons the first power-play of the game after a minor penalty due to tripping. CSS was able to limit Concordia to only three blocked shots, and successful killed the power-play. The period would end and the score would be 2-1 in the Saints favor going into the third.
Seven minutes into the third, St. Scholastica would give the Falcons another power play opportunity, but would limit CUW to only one shot on goal. A minute after the penalty kill, a third penalty would be called on CSS for elbowing. This penalty would be harder to fight off for the Saints, but they would successfully kill it. Concordia would take a timeout with about 50 seconds left on the clock. The Saints had the faceoff in Concordia's zone and kept it down on that end for about 10 seconds, until the Falcons came on the attack and found the net quickly to tie the game at 2-2 with 32 seconds left in regulation.Â
In overtime, the Saints were on the attack with 10 seconds remaining, but they would be called for a tripping penalty. That put the face-off down at CSS' end and off that face-off the Falcons would score the game-winner with five seconds left to make the final 3-2.
