ANGOLA, Ind. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team needed an extra-attacker goal to force overtime and eventually tie Trine University (Ind.) 4-4 on Saturday in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) action.
The Action
Like Friday night at Adrian, the Saints struck first as
Brett Radford (Campbell River, British Columbia/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Canmore-AJHL)) found the net less than four minutes into the game to make it 1-0. The Thunder (0-9-2, 0-6-2 NCHA) answered two minutes later to tie the contest at 1-1.
Trine took a 2-1 lead midway through the first period on a power-play goal and that would be the score at the first intermission.
Early in the second period,
Nate Pionk (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS (Minot-NAHL)) knotted the contest at 2-2.
Cole Golka (Ardrossan, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Dryden Ice Dogs-SIJHL)) and
Kyle Star (Langley, British, Columbia/Brookswood (Trail Smoke-BCHL)) had the assists. That was the lone goal of the second period.
It was the same trio combining two minutes into the third period to give St. Scholastica a 3-2 lead as Pionk netted his second of the game. The lead didn't last long, however, as the Thunder quickly tied it again less than three minutes later.
Trine then took a 4-3 lead with a power-play goal following a major penalty with 4:14 remaining. CSS then earned a power-play with 2:26 left in regulation and pulled the goalie for the extra-attacker 36 seconds into the power-play to make it 6-on-4. CSS would fail to score on the power-play, but five seconds after it expired
Davis Ross (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances HS (Fort Frances-SIJHL)) beat the goaltender to tie the contest at 4-4 with 30 seconds remaining. Pionk and
Parker Mismash (Edina, Minn./Edina HS (Minnesota Magicians-NAHL)) had the assists.
The Thunder out-shot the Saints 5-3 in the five-minute overtime, but neither team would score as the contest ended in a 4-4 tie.
Goaltending
Forbes Ploszaj (Gilbert, Arizona/Gilbert HS (Aberdeen-NAHL)) made 34 saves for the Saints, while Brett Young had 40 saves for the Thunder.
