ST. CLOUD, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica men's hockey team beat out Saint John's University 5-1 Thursday night after scoring three goals in the first period alone. The Johnnies were unbeaten in their last five games previous to tonight.

First Period
Two minutes into the first period, CSS pulled their goaltender to give the team an extra attacker on a delayed penalty. A few seconds later, Mark Whiteley (Surrey, British Columbia/Holy Cross HS (Marian University)), with the assist from Carson Rose (Surrey, British Columbia/Elgin Park Secondary (Weyburn-SJHL)) and Mike Nolan (Aldergrove, British Columbia/Yale Secondary (Fresno-WSHL)), made quick work of the Johnnies (8-3-2) by scoring the first goal of the game. With St. Scholastica up early 1-0, 10 minutes later and 14 minutes into the game, Ryan Cooper (New Westminster, British Columbia/New Westminster Secondary (Dauphin-MJHL)) and Brett Radford (Campbell River, British Columbia/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Canmore-AJHL)) assisted Parker Mismash (Edina, Minn./Edina HS (Minnesota Magicians-NAHL)) to put the Saints up 2-0, widening the lead.

With two minutes left to go in the period, a penalty was called on the Johnnies for interference, giving St. Scholastica a power play opportunity. The Saints struggled to score until there was 15 seconds left remaining in the period. Nolan assisted Davis Ross (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances HS (Fort Frances-SIJHL)), bringing St. Scholastica to a 3-0 lead that extended into the second period.

This is the only period where the Saints out-shot the Johnnies, with 11 for CSS and eight for SJU.

Second Period
The Johnnies got things started this period by having two penalties called on them: one for slashing and the other for interference. This gave CSS a 5-on-3 player advantage, which the team took full advantage of. Whiteley scored after catching the assist from Radford. Whiteley's second goal of the game established a 4-0 lead.

With five minutes left to go in the period, the Johnnies slipped the puck past the CSS goaltender, scoring their first goal of the game to finally put themselves on the board. Now at 4-1, the Johnnies thought they made it a two-goal game in the final minute, but the goal was waved off. The Johnnies had 10 shots on goal, while CSS had eight.

Third Period
Both teams were evenly matched throughout the period. However, CSS finally broke away and scored when Whiteley assisted Kristofer McKinzie (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall School (Minnesota Magicians-NAHL)) for an empty net goal to make the final 5-1.

Notable Performances
Nolan, McKinzie and Kyle Star (Langley, British, Columbia/Brookswood (Trail Smoke-BCHL)) each had three shots on goal. Six other players had two shots on goal each. Nolan and Radford each recorded two assists.

Goaltending
CSS goaltender Nick Trenciansky (Vancouver, British Columbia/Holy Cross Regional HS (Kindersley-SJHL)) stopped 28 out of 29 shots on goal. His save percentage is now .941 this season. SJU's goaltender Andrew Lindgren stopped 21 out of 26 shots that he faced.
