MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica men's hockey team beat out Augsburg University 5-2 in a non-conference game Saturday night. The Saints have won six of the last eight meetings against the Auggies.
First Period
Both teams were matched until seven minutes into the game, when CSS began to take off.
Mike Nolan (Aldergrove, British Columbia/Yale Secondary (Fresno-WSHL)) and
Parker Mismash (Edina, Minn./Edina HS (Minnesota Magicians-NAHL)) assisted to
Cole Golka (Ardrossan, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Dryden Ice Dogs-SIJHL)) during a power play for the first goal of the game. Golka's first goal of the season put the Saints up 1-0 early.
The Saints struggled to score again this period, but outshot Augsburg 17-9.
Second Period
Augsburg shut down CSS this period, and began to lead. The first goal was off a breakaway ten minutes in, and the second occurred with only four minutes left in the period. AU also outshot the Saints 18-12.
Third Period
Kyle Star (Langley, British, Columbia/Brookswood (Trail Smoke-BCHL)) got things started two minutes into the period by scoring off of a breakaway, tying the game at 2-2. This goal gave St. Scholastica the momentum they need to take back the lead. Three minutes later,
Dustin Cordeiro (Kitchener, Ontario/Elliot Lake Secondary School (Cochrane-NOJHL)) assisted to Mismash to put the Saints ahead 3-2.
With seven minutes left in the game,
Mark Whiteley (Surrey, British Columbia/Holy Cross HS (Marian University)) scored, with the assist from
Kale Derkson (Regina, Saskatchewan/Sheldon Williams Collegiate/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Notre Dame-SJHL)), to strengthen the lead 4-2.
Kristofer McKinzie (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall School (Minnesota Magicians-NAHL)) and
Jordan Fralich (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall School (Bismarck-NAHL)) assisted to
Nolan Ross (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances HS (Fort Frances-SIJHL)) a minute later to solidify the win with a final score of 5-2.
Notables Performances
Mismash and Star each had five shots on goal. Golka had four. Mismash has now scored ten points this season.
For goaltending, St. Scholastica's
Nick Trenciansky (Vancouver, British Columbia/Holy Cross Regional HS (Kindersley-SJHL)) saved 33 shots out of 35 shots he faced. Augsburg's Nick Schmit saved 35 out of 40 shots faced.
