The Action
Penalties filled the stat sheet early on as each team committed two penalties in the first nine minutes of the game. The Saints capitalized off a pair of Spartan (0-2-1, 0-1-0 NCHA) penalties early as
Nate Pionk (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS (Minot-NAHL)) scored his first collegiate goal with the 5-on-3 advantage five minutes in to make it 1-0.
Parker Mismash (Edina, Minn./Edina HS (Minnesota Magicians-NAHL)) and
Brett Radford (Campbell River, British Columbia/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Canmore-AJHL)) had the assists. That was the lone goal of the period with the Saints out-shooting Aurora 12-6.
The floodgates started to open in the second period. Radford got the scoring started less than two minutes into the period to make it 2-0.
Kyle Star (Langley, British, Columbia/Brookswood (Trail Smoke-BCHL)) had the assist.
Seth Chumley (Cambridge, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret’s (Minnesota Iron Rangers-SIJHL)) scored his third goal in the last two games with 14:00 left in the period to extend the margin to 3-0.
Sam Williams (Winnipeg, Manitoba/River East Collegiate (Melville-SJHL)) and
Kale Derkson (Regina, Saskatchewan/Sheldon Williams Collegiate/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Notre Dame-SJHL)) were credited with the assists.
Three minutes later,
Jordan Fralich (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall School (Bismarck-NAHL)) skated the length of the ice and had a highlight reel goal to make it 4-0. Goaltender
Nick Trenciansky (Vancouver, British Columbia/Holy Cross Regional HS (Kindersley-SJHL)) had the assist. The final goal of the period came in the final two minutes when
Mark Whiteley (Surrey, British Columbia/Holy Cross HS (Marian University)) found the net to give St. Scholastica a 5-0 lead at the second intermission.
The Spartans kept fighting in the third period and recorded a power-play goal, which was the first allowed this season by CSS. Aurora added one more goal midway through the period to make the final 5-2.
