Men’s Basketball to Host Tommies in Home Opener

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team will have its first action at the Reif Gymnasium Tuesday night when the University of St. Thomas makes its first-ever trip to Duluth.

What You Need to Know about the Saints:
-The Saints suffered a pair of defeats at the Husky Hoopster Classic to open the season over the weekend.
-CSS fell to No. 20 Saint John's University on Friday, who also beat Division II St. Cloud State on Saturday.
-Sophomore guard Collin Anderson (Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) scored 14 points in each game.
-Junior guard Brandon Newman (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) averaged 13 points per game.
-Junior guard Nate Weets (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS) led the Saints with 16 points against the Johnnies and did not miss a free throw on the weekend (9-for-9).
-Opponents were 22-of-25 from the free throw line over the weekend.
-Freshman Jarod Wilken (Annandale, Minn./Annandale HS) averaged 10.5 points per game off the bench.
-CSS has won only two home openers since the 2005-06 season.
 
What You Need to Know about St. Thomas:
-The Tommies enter Tuesday night's matchup with a 1-1 record.
-St. Thomas was in Ohio over the weekend where it defeated Dickinson College (Pa.) to open the season, but fell to No. 13 Marietta College (Ohio) in overtime.
-Senior forward Ryan Boll scored a career-high 39 points in the loss to Marietta and is averaging 28.5 points after the first two games.
-Boll was a Second Team All-MIAC selection last season.
-Junior guard G.T. Johnson is averaging 13 points per game.
-The Tommies played over the weekend without four of its projected top eight players.
-St. Thomas is picked to finish tied for second in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC).
-St. Thomas has won 12 consecutive MIAC regular season titles.

Series History: St. Thomas defeated the Saints 83-65 last season in St. Paul … It was the first meeting since the 2006-07 season … This will be the Tommies' first-ever game in Duluth against the Saints.
 
Looking Ahead: The Saints remain in the Twin Ports, but will be across the bridge at the University of Wisconsin-Superior Merrill Thompson Tip-Off Classic on Saturday and Sunday. CSS will open the tournament against UW-Stout on Saturday at 5 p.m.
