MORRIS, Minn. (
csssaints.com)- The St. Scholastica men's soccer team lost to the University of Minnesota Morris 1-0 in overtime at a rainy Cougar Field on Saturday. CSS had won 74 straight UMAC regular season games going into the game and was unbeaten in its last 118 regular season and postseason contests. Minnesota Morris was the last conference team to defeat the Saints during the regular season on October 3, 2009.
First Half
Both teams were evenly matched throughout this half. The first shot on goal came two minutes in from the Cougars, with their next shot on goal coming six minutes in.
21 minutes into half,
Luke Buckton (Bath, England/Writhlington School) shot the first shot on goal for the Saints, but the ball was saved by the Morris goalkeeper. 14 minutes later, now 35 into the half, the Cougars shot a header, their third shot on goal, which was saved by St. Scholastica goalkeeper
Sandy Davidson-Hunt (Kenora, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas).
Buckton quickly rebounded a few seconds, but this shot on goal was also saved. Both teams would fight hard to get a goal before the half was over, but they would not avail. The score would be 0-0 going into the second half. The Cougars had three shots on goal this half, and CSS had two.
Second Half
One minute in,
Trygve Rennan (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) would start things out strong for the Saints with a shot on goal. Minnesota Morris shot on goal a few minutes later, which would be saved by Davidson-Hunt.
Armin Bobaric (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) would get the last shot on goal of this period, with 25 more minutes to go in the half. These next 25 minutes would be filled with suspense, as both teams tried to overpower one another. Time would eventually run out, and with the score 0-0, the game headed into overtime.
The Streak Ends
Overtime only last six minutes and 30 seconds, but was filled with action. Three minutes in, the Saints would build up their momentum, setting up
Noah Hooey (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) for a shot on goal. The next two minutes would include four shots that either went wide or hit the crossbar. In the 97th minute, the Saints gave the ball away just above box and Morris took advantage as Gabe Arrequin finished to five the Cougars the 1-0 victory.
