DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The College of St. Scholastica men's soccer team put together an impressive second half performance Saturday afternoon at Saints Field, scoring all of its goals in the back-half of the game to defeat the University of Northwestern Eagles by a score of 3-0.
The Saints continued to look sharp after coming off an 11-0 UMAC opening win against the Northland LumberJacks on Tuesday. The first half was dominated heavily by the Saints, as they controlled the ball and tempo of the game for the first 30 minutes.
There was a scare in the first half for the Saints, however. The Eagles received a penalty kick after CSS goalkeeper Corrado Rosato (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) bobbled the save and dove for the loose ball, taking out a Northwestern striker in the process. UNW's Eric Fast took the kick, but was denied by a diving Rosato who knocked the ball away from the net and rose up with both fists pumping as his teammates came over to acknowledge how big of a save it was for them.
Darby Henderson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) in particular controlled the first half for CSS by creating numerous scoring opportunities for himself and his team and making sure to pull apart the Northwestern defense while doing so. Although they had nothing to show for at the half on the scoreboard, the Saints definitely had the momentum heading into the locker room.
The Saints finally broke open the scoreless game 15 minutes into the second half. Jonny Harkin (Birmingham, England/St. Benedicts School), off an assist from Luke Buckton (Bath, England/Writhlington School), hit a beautiful shot from the 18-yard box that curled into the bottom of the net for the first goal of the game. The keeper had no way of saving it, which should explain how amazing of a shot it was from Harkin.
Around the 70-minute mark Kyle Farrar (London, England/Kelsey Park Sports College) found the back of the net off another Buckton assist right in front of the keeper. It didn't stay 2-0 for long as Farrar decided to notch his second goal of the game after scoring in the top corner on a penalty kick. The PK was given thanks in part to Buckton's tough play inside the box, forcing Northwestern to either foul him or give him a free look at the net.
Farrar's second goal would mark the last goal of the game, which gave the Saints a 3-0 victory over the Eagles and gave Rosato his second shutout of the season. The Saints now improve to 3-3-0 (2-0-0 UMAC), while Northwestern falls to 0-4-1 (0-2-0 UMAC) with the loss.
