DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The College of St. Scholastica men's soccer team fell to No. 2 Loras College (Iowa) by a score of 4-0 Saturday afternoon at Saints Field.

In what may have seemed like a lopsided game due to the final score, the Saints fought rather well against the second-best team in the nation to open up the Advantage Emblem Cup. The game was a back-and-forth affair for the first 17 minutes of action, with the Saints accumulating more time on the offensive side than the defensive side.

At around the 17-minute mark a "hand-ball" call was made after an attempted shot by a Duhawk player, which gave Loras a penalty kick. Calvin Miller took full advantage of the opportunity and put one past St. Scholastica's goalkeeper Corrado Rosato (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) to score the first goal of the game.

The second goal was just as unfortunate as the first. This time Rosato made a great save initially, only to have the rebound be headed back into the net by Loras's Ryan Ross. After fighting so evenly early on the Saints started to slow down a bit, seeming to be in a rut after watching two goals of that nature squeak by Rosato.

Although their confidence started to waver a bit, the Saints still managed to find themselves a few great opportunities to score. One of these chances was created thanks in part to a nice give-and-go involving Luke Buckton (Bath, England/Writhlington School) and Kyle Farrar (London, England/Kelsey Park Sports College). The crowd showed their appreciation after the play as some rose to their feet and clapped, despite Buckton missing wide right after taking the shot at a difficult angle.

Loras managed to score once more before the half, which in turn gave them a three-goal advantage heading into the locker room.

The second half was much like that of the first, but without the unfortunate happenings early on that lead to two Duhawk scores. In the 72nd minute Loras' Liam O'Connell would score the fourth and final goal of the game, giving the Duhawks a 4-0 victory over the Saints.

The loss puts the Saints at 1-2-0 in overall play, while the Duhawks improve to 3-0-0 on the season.
