LA CROSSE, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team split its doubleheader on the road at No. 18 University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Sunday afternoon. The Saints fell in the first contest 5-4 and rebounded to defeat the Eagles 12-8 in the second game.

Game 1: UWL 5, CSS 4
La Crosse jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second, and a solo homer in the fourth pushed the lead to 2-0. The Eagles would tack on an unearned run in the fifth, and scored another two runs on a pair of doubles and a single in the sixth to open up a 5-0 lead that remained heading into the eighth inning.

The Saints would attempt to mount a comeback in the eighth as Chris Olson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS ) reached on a throwing error, advancing Steven Neutzling (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral ) to second and allowing Trevor Bernsdorf (Meadowlands, Minn./Floodwood HS ) to score after he singled earlier in the inning. Shortly after, another UW-La Crosse throwing error allowed Neutzling to score, closing the gap to 5-2 in favor of the Eagles.

In the ninth, T. Bernsdorf and Neutzling would come around to score again, this time on a two out, two run homer from Neutzling following a Bernsdorf walk. Despite scoring a combined four runs in the eighth and ninth, the Saints were unable to complete the rally and fell by a final of 5-4.

UW-La Crosse would tally five runs on 10 hits, while CSS mustered four runs on nine hits, leaving 10 men on base. Seven Saints starters recorded hits, with Neutzling and Riley Bernsdorf (Meadowlands, Minn. /Floodwood HS) being the only two with multiple hits in the contest. Neutzling and T. Bernsdorf scored two runs apiece.

Caleb Boushley took home the win for the Eagles, giving up two runs on eight hits in eight innings. Daniel Wood (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS ) took the loss for CSS, giving up four runs on in 5.1 innings of work.

Game 2: CSS 12, UWL 8
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Saints fell behind early again as the Eagles started the game out with a triple, a home run and three singles to take an early 3-0 lead. After tacking a run on in the fourth to open up a four run lead, Sam Christofferson (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS ) led off the fifth with a pinch-hit home run to get CSS on the board at 4-1 and give the Saints some life heading into the latter innings.

The Eagles would attempt to smother any chance of the Saints getting hot, responding with a home run of their own in the fifth to regain the four run lead at 5-1. The Saints again attempted to spark a rally in the seventh with a pair of singles and a run, but UW-La Crosse responded again in the bottom of the inning with a pair of singles and run of their own, giving the Eagles a 6-2 lead heading into the eighth.

However, the Saints could not be contained in the eighth, exploding for seven runs on six hits. Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) walked to lead off the inning and a pair of singles brought him home to cut the lead to 6-3. Following a pair of outs, the Saints loaded the bases for Al Marolt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS), who delivered with a RBI single to cut it to 6-4. With the bases still loaded, the Saints called on Conor Wollenzien (North Mankato, Minn. /Mankato West HS) to hit. Just as in the fifth, the Saints' pinch hitter came through, smashing a grand slam home run to give CSS an 8-6 lead. Drew Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS ) crossed the plate for the final run of the inning, as he doubled and was brought home on an A. Colvard triple, giving CSS a 9-6 lead.

After blanking the stunned Eagles in the eighth, the Saints tacked on another three insurance runs in the ninth. After loading the bases with one out, the Saints singled twice to open up a 12-6 lead. Despite La Crosse's best efforts to regroup after a two-run homer, the Eagles could not rally in the ninth, giving CSS the 12-8 road victory.

The Saints tallied 14 hits in the contest, led by A.Colvard going 4-for-5 with three RBIs. Wollenzien tallied four RBIs and Marolt was 3-for-5 with three RBIs as well. Jordan Risse (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington HS ) picked up the win for CSS, scattering 13 hits for six runs and striking out eight in seven innings. Nic Pierick picked up the loss for the Eagles, giving up four runs on four hits in just two thirds of an inning.
