AUBURNDALE, Fla. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team fell to No. 7 University of Southern Maine, but responded to beat Salve Regina University (R.I.) in the nightcap on Sunday.

#7 Southern Maine 5, CSS 3
The Huskies (4-0) scored four runs in the bottom of the second to hold off the Saints 5-3 to open play on Sunday.

Steven Neutzling (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral ) had a RBI single to bring in Al Marolt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) to put the Saints up 1-0 after a half inning. Southern Maine took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the second after a Saints error led to three unearned runs. A two-out triple was a key play in that inning.

Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) and Marolt had RBI singles in the top of the fifth to cut the Husky lead to 4-3. Southern Maine added insurance with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh to make it 5-3.

CSS was able to get a runner on second in each inning after the fifth, but could not move runner past that base as the Huskies prevailed 5-3.

Daniel Wood (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS ) picked up the loss despite allowing one earned run and striking out five in six innings. The Saints had seven stolen bases in the loss. A. Colvard and Trevor Bernsdorf (Meadowlands, Minn./Floodwood HS ) each had a pair of hits.

CSS 6, Salve Regina 2
After falling behind early, the Saints scored six unanswered runs to defeat the Seahawks 6-2 to finish the day.

A pair of two-out RBIs gave Salve Regina (0-3) a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. After the Seahawks stranded a runner on third in the top of the third, St. Scholastica tied it in the bottom frame on a Brian Minks (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS ) two-RBI single.

Drew Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS ) doubled to leadoff the bottom of the fifth. Following a sacrifice, he scored on a Marolt RBI single to give the Saints a 3-2 lead.

Sam Christofferson (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS ) had a RBI single in the sixth to make it 4-2. A. Colvard scored all the way from second on a Marolt bunt in the seventh and Marolt had another RBI single in the eighth to give the Saints the 6-2 victory.

Jordan Risse (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington HS ) struck out a career-high 11 batters to earn the victory. Jake Turner (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS ) went 1.2 innings to earn his second save of the year. Marolt finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
