WINONA, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team suffered its first defeat of the season in a game one loss to Saint Mary's University, but responded with a game two victory to gain the split with the Cardinals on Saturday at Max Molock Field.

Game 1: SMU 3, CSS 1
The Cardinals (9-3) took advantage of a Saints error in the sixth inning to take game one 3-1.

St. Scholastica ace Daniel Wood (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS ) got the start and allowed only one hit and four base runners in four innings, but left with a no decision. He also recorded six strikeouts.

The Saints offense got things going in the top of the sixth with a one-out double by Steven Neutzling (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral ). After a passed ball moved Neutzling to third, Riley Bernsdorf (Meadowlands, Minn. /Floodwood HS) had a sacrifice fly to center to bring in Neutzling and give the Saints a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom frame, the Cardinals earned a leadoff walk, which was followed by a double. The runner from first was trying to come all the way around to score, but was thrown out at the plate.

After a strikeout, the Saints were one out away from getting out of the jam. Unfortunately, a CSS error prolonged the inning and the next batter ripped a two-run double to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead. Another run came in later in the inning to make it 3-1.

Jordan Risse (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington HS ) tripled in the top of the seventh, but CSS could not get anything else as it fell 3-1.

Five different Saints had hits in the loss, while four different Cardinals had hits in the win.

Game 2: CSS 8, SMU 3
Neutzling had a big second game as St. Scholastica scored six runs in the first three innings en route to an 8-3 victory.

Neutzling began his big game with a two-out, two-run home in the top of the first to give CSS a 2-0 lead. After Saint Mary's pushed a run across in the bottom of the first, Chris Olson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS ) had a RBI double to bring in Trevor Bernsdorf (Meadowlands, Minn./Floodwood HS ) and make it 3-1 in the top of the second.

The Cardinals hit a home run in the bottom of the second to get back within one, but Neutzling drove in Brian Minks (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS ) with a double and then later scored on a passed ball. R. Bernsdorf also scored later in the inning on an Olson RBI to extend the lead to 6-2.

Neutzling had another double in the fifth inning and came in to score on a T. Bernsdorf groundout. He also scored the team's final run of the game in the seventh to make the final 8-3.

Neutzling finished 4-for-4 with a home run, two doubles, three RBIs and four runs scored. Minks had a pair of hits and scored twice.

In his first start as a Saint, Martin Alcoverde (Tucson, Ariz. /Sahuarita HS (Mesabi Range CC)) earned the victory, going 4.2 innings. Joe Gonrowski (Elk River, Minn./Elk River HS ) and Aidan Zurn (Stillwater, Minn. /Stillwater HS ) combined to pitch 2.1 innings of relief, allowing only one hit and striking out two.
