csssaints.com) – The No. 13 St. Scholastica men's hockey team led 2-0, but then gave up a short-handed goal late in the second period and then Concordia University (Wis.) tied it in third before winning it with eight seconds remaining in overtime 3-2 on Friday night.
Getting Out in FrontAfter a scoreless first period, which saw both teams put nine shots on goal, the Saints got on the board first on a
Josh Hansen (Chilliwack, British Columbia/Unity Christian School (Chilliwack-BCHL) ) power-play goal five minutes into the second period.
Michael Spring (Kelowna, British Columbia/Okanagan Mission (Chilliwack-BCHL) ) had the assist.
Later in the period with seven minutes remaining, Spring, himself, found the net to make it 2-0 St. Scholastica.
Joel Paiement (Okotoks, Alberta/Holy Trinity Academy (Calgary Canucks-AJHL) ) was credited with the assist.
Tables TurnThe Saints were on the power-play at the end of the second period and with a minute remaining on the power-play Connor Hogg scored short-handed for the Falcons to cut the lead to 2-1 at the second intermission.
Concordia carried that momentum into the third period as only 26 seconds in Taylor Gauld knotted it up at 2-2. The Saints killed off two Concordia power-plays in the third and could not convert on a power-play of their own as the game went to overtime.
OvertimeThe Saints put the first four shots on net in the overtime session, including two in the first minute. After matching minors were called with less than two minutes to play, Concordia struck on its second shot on goal of overtime with only eight seconds remaining as Braden Cone found the net to make the final 3-2.
GoaltendingTyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) made 31 saves in the loss for the Saints, while Jack Romanuik had 35 saves in the victory for the Falcons.
