Men's Hockey Drops Game 1 of NCHA Semifinals to Adrian

ADRIAN, Mich. (csssaints.com) – The No. 2-ranked Adrian College (Mich.) Bulldogs scored in each period to build a 3-0 lead over the No. 15 St. Scholastica men's hockey team and then added an empty-netter late to take game one of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) Harris Cup semifinals 4-2 on Friday night.
 
All Adrian in the First and Second
The Bulldogs came out and out-shot the Saints 30-11 thru two periods of play. Less than three minutes into the contest, Brian Bachnak made it 1-0 Adrian. Then a little over five minutes into the second period, Austin Hervey extended the Bulldogs lead to 2-0. Seven minutes into the third period Trevor Boyd made the score 3-0 Bulldogs.
 
CSS Comeback Falls Short
Less than three minutes after the Bulldogs' third goal, Keegan Bruce (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham HS (Weyburn-SJHL) ) got the Saints on the board with his 14th goal of the season. Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ) and Brandon Millin (Port Moody, British Columbia/Heritage Woods HS (Notre Dame Hounds-SJHL) ) were credited the assists.
 
With 3:11 remaining, Derek Sutliffe (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School (Langley Rivermen-BCHL) ) scored a short-handed goal to cut the Adrian lead to 3-2. Josh Hansen (Chilliwack, British Columbia/Unity Christian School (Chilliwack-BCHL) ) had the assist.
 
Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) was pulled from the net with 48 seconds left and the Bulldogs were able to capitalize as Boyd added his second of the night to seal the Adrian 4-2 victory.
 
Goaltending
Bruggeman made 34 saves in the loss for the Saints, while Kevin Entmaa had 21 saves for the Bulldogs. Adrian had a 38-23 shot advantage for the game.
 
Game 2 Tomorrow
The Saints will have to win game two tomorrow to force a mini-game and keep their season alive. Puck drop for game two is scheduled for 3 p.m. (ET). If the Saints were to force a mini-game, it would take place right after game two.
