ADRIAN, Mich. (csssaints.com) - The No. 15 St. Scholastica men's hockey team ended its season on Saturday afternoon against No. 2-ranked Adrian College (Mich.) after a 4-2 loss in the second game of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) Harris Cup semifinals.
First Period
Very early in the period, a set of penalties put a player from each team in the box. During the four-on-four play, Adrian's Austin Hervey found the back of the net to put the Bulldogs up 1-0 with just under four minutes having been played in the first. The team exchanged shots after that until a CSS penalty put the Bulldogs on the power play. The Saints were unable to kill it, as Adrian's Chris Leone fired a rocket into the net to put the Bulldogs up 2-0. Three minutes later, the Saints capitalized on a power play of their own, and Derek Sutliffe (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School (Langley Rivermen-BCHL) ), assisted by Michael Spring (Kelowna, British Columbia/Okanagan Mission (Chilliwack-BCHL) ) and Josh Hansen (Chilliwack, British Columbia/Unity Christian School (Chilliwack-BCHL) ), slipped a shot past the Adrian goaltender, giving the period its final score of 2-1.
Second Period
The Saints kept the momentum going to start the second period. They were able to kill off an Adrian power play. Less than 30 seconds after gaining full strength, Keegan Bruce (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham HS (Weyburn-SJHL) ) extended his point streak to eight games with a goal, assisted by Nowakowski and Ryan Cooper (New Westminster, British Columbia/New Westminster Secondary (Dauphin-MJHL) ), tying the score at 2-2. The Saints were unable to take advantage of a power play later in the period, and the score stayed tied going into the second intermission.
Third Period
Neither team was able to score for the majority of the period. With three and a half minutes left in the game, Adrian scored its third goal to regain the lead. The Bulldogs managed to keep the puck stuck in the Saints zone for most of the last two minutes of the play, and Saints' goaltender Tyler Bruggerman was only able to make his move to the bench with just 12 seconds left in the game. The Saints worked to make their extra man count in the last few seconds, but lost the puck to Adrian's Austin Hervey who launched a shot down the ice and into the empty net with just one second left on the clock, giving the game its final score of 4-2.
Goaltending
Bruggeman ended the game with 37 saves for the Saints. Kevin Entmaa was between the pipes for the Bulldogs, and he saved 25 of the 27 shots that he faced.Â
Season at an End
The Saints ended the season with a record of 15-10-3 overall. The team will be graduating eight seniors this year: Keegan Bruce (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham HS (Weyburn-SJHL) ), Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ), Justin Krabben (Rocky Mountain House, Alberta/Hunting Hills HS (Canmore-AJHL) ), Joel Paiement (Okotoks, Alberta/Holy Trinity Academy (Calgary Canucks-AJHL) ), Michael Spring (Kelowna, British Columbia/Okanagan Mission (Chilliwack-BCHL) ), Hunter Bergerson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Minot-NAHL) ), Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ), and Rich Coyne (Cave Creek, Ariz./Pinnacle HS (Alaska-Fairbanks) ).Â
