DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) -- The No. 15 St. Scholastica men's hockey team fell to No. 1 St. Norbert College (Wis.) 3-2 Friday night at Mars Lakeview Arena, after the Green Knights scored all three goals in a four-minute span of the second period.
First Period, First Score
Only 17 seconds into the game, St. Scholastica's Keegan Bruce (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham HS (Weyburn-SJHL) ) put the Saints on top 1-0 with an assist from Josh Hansen (Chilliwack, British Columbia/Unity Christian School (Chilliwack-BCHL) ). CSS would then go on to kill a couple of St. Norbert power-plays in the period to take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
Second Period Fall
CSS carried the lead well into the second period until the Green Knights eventually broke through with a Tanner Froese unassisted goal on a powerplay to tie up the game 1-1. With St. Norbert's newfound energy, Michael Hill and Sean Campbell added a pair of even-strength goals one minute and 18 second apart to extend its lead to 3-1. The Green Knights out-shot the Saints 19-6 in the period.
Third Period Rally
After a 15-minute delay to fix a shattered panel of glass early in the period, the Saints were able to regroup during this time to try and gain momentum to close the gap. With only 44 seconds left in the regulation, St. Scholastica pulled goalie Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) to put an extra attacker on the ice. CSS was able to take advantage as forward Steven Phee (Balzac, Alberta/George McDougall HS (Canmore-AJHL) ) re-directed a Justin Krabben (Rocky Mountain House, Alberta/Hunting Hills HS (Canmore-AJHL) ) shot to make it 3-2 with 38 seconds left. Brandon Millin (Port Moody, British Columbia/Heritage Woods HS (Notre Dame Hounds-SJHL) ) was also credited an assist.
With the score differential now 1, CSS pulled their goalie again in order to force a tie, but was unsuccessful getting the puck into the offensive zone and fell 3-2.
Shots on Goal/Goaltending
St. Norbert controlled play for most of the night. Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) faced 47 shots in the game, saving 44, while the Green Knights' T.J. Black took on 26 shots on goal, stopping 24.
