DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The No. 15 St. Scholastica men's hockey team ended its two game series against No. 1 St. Norbert College (Wis.) with a 2-2 tie Saturday afternoon at Mars Lakeview Arena.
First PeriodSt. Scholastica got the scoring started for the second straight day in the first period on a
Justin Krabben (Rocky Mountain House, Alberta/Hunting Hills HS (Canmore-AJHL) ) goal just 4:08 into the game. The goal came on assists by
Derek Sutliffe (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School (Langley Rivermen-BCHL) ) and
Joel Paiement (Okotoks, Alberta/Holy Trinity Academy (Calgary Canucks-AJHL) ) with just 15 seconds left in the power play.
Seven minutes after the Krabben goal, St. Norbert would tie the game up with a power play goal beating Saints goaltender
Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) to tie the game up at one apiece.
Just three minutes after St. Norbert's first goal the Green Knights would take the lead, scoring their second goal with 4:53 left in the first period.
At the end of a very active first period the Saints found themselves down by one goal at 2-1. There were a total of eight penalties called in the period and the Saints out-shot the Green Knights 10-7.
Second PeriodCSS would again score quickly into the period as Sutliffe followed up his assist with a goal of his own on helpers by
Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ) and
Keegan Bruce (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham HS (Weyburn-SJHL) ) to tie the game up at 2-2.
The rest of the second period came and went with a scoreless effort by both teams and at the second intermission the scoreboard read 2-2 going into the third period.
Third PeriodThe Saints only managed nine shots on goal in the third period, but held St. Norbert to just seven as they played a scoreless third period that included four total penalties, both of them offsetting minors to both teams. CSS also had one shot strike the pipe with under 10 minutes to go in regulation
At the end of the period the score still read 2-2 and extra hockey needed to be played to determine the winner.
OvertimeIn overtime the Saints would only get one shot on goal, however, they managed to also play stellar defense as the game ended in a 2-2 draw
GoaltendingBruggeman made 18 saves for the Saints, while Tony Kujava had 25 saves for the Green Knights.
Up NextSt. Scholastica (14-6-3, 12-5-1 NCHC) will close out the regular season next weekend when it welcomes another nationally-ranked top 5 team to Mars Lakeview Arena as Adrian College (Mich.) faces the Saints Friday and Saturday.
