FOND DU LAC, Wis. (
csssaints.com) – Marian University (Wis.) scored three first period goals and the St. Scholastica men's hockey team could not recover in a 4-3 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) loss late Friday night at the Blue Line Family Ice Center.
Marian Scores 3 in the First
Jake Howie put the Sabres up over five minutes into the game with an even-strength goal. Less than a minute and a half later, Marian made it 2-0 with a Nick Monfils power-play goal. It was another power-play goal with under nine minutes to go in the opening period by the Sabres to make it 3-0 at the first intermission. Marian only had a slight advantage in shots at 9-7 in the period.
Saints Get Back In It
St. Scholastica out-shot Marian 12-5 in the second and found itself down only a goal at the second intermission. The Saints got on the board with 15:25 in the clock as
Cole Golka (Ardrossan, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Dryden Ice Dogs-SIJHL)) found the back of the net.
Derek Sutliffe (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School (Langley Rivermen-BCHL) ) and
Brandon Parrone (Peoria, Ariz./Brophy College Prep (Melfort-SJHL) ) had the assists.
With under seven minutes left in the period,
Steven Phee (Balzac, Alberta/George McDougall HS (Canmore-AJHL) ) made it 3-2 thanks to assists from
Brandon Millin (Port Moody, British Columbia/Heritage Woods HS (Notre Dame Hounds-SJHL) ) and
Mark Whiteley (Surrey, British Columbia/Holy Cross HS (Marian University)).
Sabres Hold Off
Less than three minutes into the third period, the Sabres recorded a third power-play goal with Brodie Jamieson tallying the goal to make the margin 4-2. CSS responded with less than seven minutes to go with a
Max Mettler (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Minot-NAHL)) unassisted goal, but it wasn't enough as Marian hung on for the 4-3 victory.
Goaltending
Peter Megariotis (Anaheim Hills, Calif./Canyon HS (Adrian)) had 14 saves in 43 minutes of play.
Zane Steeves (Red Deer, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (100 Mile Wranglers-KIJHL)) finished the game and recorded five saves. Mike Baldwin had 27 saves in the victory for the Sabres.
