Men's Basketball Pulls Away with Big Second Half

NEW ULM, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team made a program record 17, 3-pointers and scored 57 points in the second half to cruise to a 95-71 victory over Martin Luther College in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action Friday night.
 
Deadrick Leads CSS in the First Half
The home squad had the advantage out of the gate, leading for the first seven minutes of the game and led by as much as eight five minutes in.
 
After that the Saints woke up and went on a 15-1 run and after a Zach Dahlman (Braham, Minn./Braham HS) three-point-play led by six. With St. Scholastica leading by one with six minutes left in the half, CSS connected on four straight 3-pointers, three from Kory Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) to give the Saints a 36-26 lead with 3:45 remaining.
 
The Knights scored the final six points of the first half, but the Saints still led 38-34 as the teams entered the locker room.
 
The Saints connected on eight 3-pointers in the first half, five by Deadrick. Deadrick put up 17 points in the half.
 
Lights Out Second Half
The Saints began the second half with a 21-5 scoring run to essentially put the game away. During that run, Brandon Newman (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) scored the first eight points of the half. He scored 11 points in the half and all of those points came in the first five minutes.
 
After that it was the Collin Anderson (Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) show as he scored all 21of his points in the half, including making six 3-pointers. St. Scholastica led by as much as 26 before winning by a final score of 95-71.
 
The Saints shot 61 percent from the floor in the half and made nine 3-pointers. Martin Luther shot 52 percent for the game, but took 19 less shots than CSS.
 
Top Performances for CSS
Anderson led the way with a game-high 21 points. Deadrick finished with 18 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Newman also finished with 18 points and Dahlman added 10 points. Julius Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) dished out six assists.
 
Top Performances for the Opponent
TJ Babinec led Martin Luther with 16 points.

The Saints (5-4, 3-1 UMAC) will face Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato tomorrow with tip-off scheduled for 5 p.m.
