Men's Basketball Drops Home Opener to Cobbers

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team shot only 36 percent from the floor, while Concordia College-Moorhead shot 59 percent to spoil the Saints' home opener by an 80-64 final on Saturday at the Reif Gymnasium.
 
Back-and-Forth First Half
Neither team led by more than four points for much of the first half. There were eight ties and nine lead changes in the first 17 minutes of the game. A Kory Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) 3-pointer gave the Saints their biggest lead of 17-13 with 11 minutes to go before halftime.
 
Brandon Newman (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) tied for the game for the ninth time with a layup at the 3:30 mark. The Cobbers then made back-to-back buckets to take a four-point lead and after a Deadrick layup, Dawson Peterson drained a 3-pointer at the end of the half for the biggest lead of the game for either team at 38-33 Concordia.
 
Concordia shot 61 percent in the first 20 minutes, while the Saints were 35 percent. The Cobbers were 0-for-3 from the free throw line and the Saints were 5-of-8.
 
Second Half Slow Start
In the opening 11 minutes of the second half, the Saints were 2-for-13 from the field and 2-for-7 from the free throw for a grand total of seven points. In the meantime, Concordia went on a 30-7 run to take a 68-40 lead.
 
That's as high as the margin got as the Cobbers came away with an 80-64 victory.
 
Top Performances for CSS
Deadrick was the only Saint in double figures with 13 points. Collin Anderson (Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) added nine points and Newman chipped in eight points. Zach Dahlman (Braham, Minn./Braham HS) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
 
Top Performances for the Opponent
Concordia had five players score in double-figures with Austin Nelson leading the charge with 15 points. Nelson also had a team-high eight rebounds. Zach Kinney had 11 points, nine assists and six rebounds.
 
Up Next
The Saints (1-3) open up Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action next Friday when they face North Central University. The game will be played at Crown College because of a schedule conflict at North Central gym. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
