DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team avenged last night's one goal loss in Ashland with an 8-2 victory over Northland College on Saturday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.
Northland Gets Early Lead
Following last night's victory, the LumberJacks came out strong in the first period and scored the first goal of the game following a CSS turnover at the blue line that led to a breakaway goal eight minutes into the contest.
CSS Takes Control
Less than five minutes after the LumberJack goal,
Cole Golka (Ardrossan, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Dryden Ice Dogs-SIJHL)) fed
Derek Sutliffe (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School (Langley Rivermen-BCHL) ) in front of the net and he ripped one top shelf to tie the game at 1-1. With less than five minutes remaining in the first period and the Saints on a power-play,
Brandon Millin (Port Moody, British Columbia/Heritage Woods HS (Notre Dame Hounds-SJHL) ) found Stephen Phee with a great pass on the backside of the play and Phee beat the goaltender with a backhand to make it 2-1 St. Scholastica.
Mark Whiteley (Surrey, British Columbia/Holy Cross HS (Marian University)) was also credited with an assist. Millin added another goal for the Saints with 2:32 left in the period to make it 3-1 at the first intermission.
Mike Nolan (Aldergrove, British Columbia/Yale Secondary (Fresno-WSHL)) and
Davis Ross (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances HS (Fort Frances-SIJHL)) had the assists.
CSS added to its lead in the first 1:08 of the second period as Nolan recorded his first collegiate tally to make it 4-1. Millin had his second assist and third point of the night in the first 22 minutes of play.
After a St. Scholastica turnover led to a second Northland goal, the Saints responded when D. Ross registered his first collegiate goal to extend the margin back to 5-2. Golka and
Josh Hansen (Chilliwack, British Columbia/Unity Christian School (Chilliwack-BCHL) ) had the assists.
It stayed 5-2 until the third period when Millin recorded his second goal of the evening on the power-play to make the score 6-2.
Sam Williams (Winnipeg, Manitoba/River East Collegiate (Melville-SJHL) ) later scored his first goal of the season midway through the period with assists from Golka and
Nolan Ross (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances HS (Fort Frances-SIJHL)). Two minutes later
Parker Weekes (Ketchum, Idaho/Holderness School (Boston Jr. Rangers-EHL)) put his first collegiate puck in the net with assists coming from
Kristofer McKinzie (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall School (Minnesota Magicians-NAHL)) and
Brandon Parrone (Peoria, Ariz./Brophy College Prep (Melfort-SJHL) ) to make the final score 8-2.
Goaltending
Peter Megariotis (Anaheim Hills, Calif./Canyon HS (Adrian)) made 17 saves to earn the victory for St. Scholastica.
Zane Steeves (Red Deer, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (100 Mile Wranglers-KIJHL)) also saw his first action as a Saint, making two stops in the final eight minutes of the contest. AJ Smith had 39 saves in the loss for the LumberJacks.
