DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The College of St. Scholastica men's soccer team continues to impress within conference play, extending its Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) record to 4-0-0 after a 3-0 victory over the University of Minnesota Morris Cougars Saturday afternoon at Saints Field.
The match featured two of the top teams in the UMAC, as far as conference records go, and it turned out to be a very physical match as time ticked away. The Saints struck early in the first half when Jordan Lennon (London, England/Chadwell Heath Academy) found the back of the net just 10 minutes into the contest. The goal was set up by Kyle Farrar (London, England/Kelsey Park Sports College) and Shawayne Folkes (Toronto, Ontario/Maxwell Heights), who had a nice give-and-go before Farrar kicked it ahead to Lennon for the shot.
The match evened out for the next 20 minutes, as neither team really asserted any sort of dominance and possession was exchanged back-and-forth around midfield. The Saints were threatening again at around the 30-minute mark, which is when a hand-ball call would be issued against Morris inside the box, giving St. Scholastica's Kyle Farrar (London, England/Kelsey Park Sports College) a penalty kick opportunity. Farrar, who is almost guaranteed to get the job done when it's just him and the keeper, got one past Cody Christ of the Cougars to extend the CSS lead to 2-0.
The score would remain 2-0 heading into the half, but with two minutes left until the 45-minute mark there were two yellow cards distributed. The first was given to Morris's Lucas Larson after committing a hard tackle towards St. Scholastica's Luke Buckton (Bath, England/Writhlington School). Moments later Lennon picked up a yellow of his own after standing in front of a Morris free kick.
The second half started out slow, as neither team could get any sort of shot off. The lull was broken in the 67th minute, however, as Farrar found Buckton for the third goal of the game. Buckton's goal was a beauty, as he slid for the loose ball in front of him and hit it home with a left-footer past the keeper. The assist would mark Farrar's third point of the day, giving him a perfect three-for-three ratio in individual points to team goals scored.
The teams were held scoreless for the last half of the second period, meaning the scoring would be done after the Buckton goal. The 3-0 final gave freshman goalkeeper Corrado Rosato (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) his third shutout of the season. Rosato didn't have to work too hard for this one though, as he didn't even record one save in the match.
Christ, on the other hand, saw 15 shots on target while he was between the posts. Three may have gotten past, but the 12 saves are definitely something positive that him and the Cougars can take away from the match versus the Saints.
