DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The No. 15 St. Scholastica men's hockey team defeated Aurora University (Ill.) by a final score of 5-1 behind an offensive surge Friday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.

First Period
CSS got the scoring started early in the first period when Michael Spring (Kelowna, British Columbia/Okanagan Mission (Chilliwack-BCHL) ) netted the first goal just two minutes into the game to make the score 1-0 in favor of the Saints. Joel Paiement (Okotoks, Alberta/Holy Trinity Academy (Calgary Canucks-AJHL) ) and Mark Whiteley (Surrey, British Columbia/Holy Cross HS (Marian University)) were credited with the assists on the early goal.

Despite an onslaught of shots for CSS, they were unable to notch another goal in the period.

Aurora did manage to score its lone goal of the game with just 3:40 left in the first period to tie the game up at one goal apiece headed into the first intermission.

Second Period
CSS would quickly retake their lead just 1:07 into the second period behind a Josh Hansen (Chilliwack, British Columbia/Unity Christian School (Chilliwack-BCHL) ) power play goal with assists going to Justin Krabben (Rocky Mountain House, Alberta/Hunting Hills HS (Canmore-AJHL) ) and Cole Golka (Ardrossan, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Dryden Ice Dogs-SIJHL)).

Just 1:33 later Brandon Millin (Port Moody, British Columbia/Heritage Woods HS (Notre Dame Hounds-SJHL) ) would get into the scoring action on yet another power play goal with the assist on this goal going to Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ), and just like that the Saints found themselves up by two goals at 3-1 with just under 17 minutes still left to play in the second period.

Towards the end of the second period with the score still set at 3-1, Hansen would record his second goal of the game with just 26 seconds left in the period. When the second period horn finally sounded the Saints had built up a three-goal lead at 4-1.

Third Period
Kale Derkson (Regina, Saskatchewan/Sheldon Williams Collegiate/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Notre Dame-SJHL)) would add the fifth and final goal for the Saints with assists going to Sam Williams (Winnipeg, Manitoba/River East Collegiate (Melville-SJHL) ) and Ryan Cooper (New Westminster, British Columbia/New Westminster Secondary (Dauphin-MJHL) ).

The Derkson goal would be all the scoring seen in the third period as CSS coasted out the rest of the game to a well-earned 5-1 victory over Aurora.

Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) earned the win in net for the Saints. He finished his night with a 23 save effort on 24 shots faced while Hansen led the team in shots taken with seven to go along with his two goals.
