Men's Basketball Pulls Away in Second Half

HANCOCK, Mich. (csssaints.com) -- The St. Scholastica's men's basketball team won 81-74 at Finlandia University (Mich.) on Friday after trailing at halftime.

First Half Lead Changes
The lead changed 10 times in the first half and the Saints led by as much as six. Finlandia took the lead late in the first half with a 3-pointer with 30 seconds remaining and led 37-36 at halftime. The Lions shot 52 percent from the floor and needed to as they were out-scored 10-0 in points off turnovers.

Saints Take Charge in Second Half
The Lions led by four early in the second half, but the Saints responded with a 15-2 run over the span of four minutes to take a nine point lead. Finlandia battled back to tie the game midway through the second half. The Saints scored six straight points after a Beau Howard (Brainerd, Minn./Pine River-Backus HS (Hibbing CC)) 3-pointer and eventually grew their lead to 11 with five minutes to go. The Lions would get within five with a minute to go, but the Saints pervailed by a final score of 81-74.

The bench out-scored Finlandia 16-4 in the second half and 33-16 for the game. CSS also attempted 16 free throws in the half, compared ti Finlandia's one attempt.

Points off Turnovers
A major factor for the Saints' win were turnovers. CSS was able to score 20 points off of turnovers, while Finlandia was only able to score four. Julius Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) led the Saints with two steals.

Top Performers
The top three scorers in this game for St. Scholastica were Zach Dahlman (Braham, Minn./Braham HS) with 16, Brandon Newman (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) with 15 and Kory Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) with 11 total points. The Lions' top scorers were Jordan LaPlant with 21, Terrance Fuller with 15 and Marcus Geralds with eight. Andrew Laughlin (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) and Dahlman led the Saints with six rebounds.
