csssaints.com) – Northland College shot 53 percent (16-of-30) from beyond the arc and held the St. Scholastica men's basketball team below 40 percent shooting for the game to edge the Saints in overtime 83-79 on Saturday.
First HalfThe Saints led for most of the first half as
Beau Howard (Brainerd, Minn./Pine River-Backus HS (Hibbing CC)) made it 20-13 following a 3-pointer with nine minutes to go. The LumberJacks quickly responded with back-to-back 3-point field goals and finished the final four minutes of the half with a 9-2 run to take a 36-34 halftime lead.
Both teams shot well in the first half with the Saints at 44 percent from the floor and 6-of-11 from deep. Northland was 8-of-13 from beyond the arc and shot 48 percent from the floor.
Second HalfNorthland extended its lead to eight four minutes into the second half. The margin climbed as high as 11 before the Saints started to chip away. The LumberJacks would only make two field goals over the span of five minutes as the Saints went on a 16-5 run to tie the game at 58-58 with 7:30 to go.
Andrew Laughlin (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) had seven of the 16 CSS points during the run.
The Saints could not take the lead as they had to continually respond to Northland. Then with a minute remaining in regulation and the scored tied at 67-67,
Jake Naslund (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) drained a jumper to put the Saints up 69-67.
On the ensuing possession, Northland missed a 3-point attempt, but gathered the offensive rebound and called timeout. Following the stoppage, Bryshaun Brown tied the game with a layup with under 30 seconds to play. The Saints would get the final possession, but could not convert as the game went to overtime tied 69-69.
OvertimeThe LumberJacks connected on back-to-back 3-pointers to take a three-point lead. Later in the period, Laughlin converted a 3-point play to tie the game at 77-77. Brown scored on the next possession and after a CSS turnover, Dan Campion drained a 3-pointer to extend the lead to five with under 30 seconds to play.
The Saints got within three, but Northland made 1-of-2 free throws to seal the game 83-79. Northland shot 67 percent in overtime
Top Performances for CSSLaughlin scored all 17 points in the second half and overtime. He also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds off the bench.
Joe Stark (Hayward, Wis./Hayward HS) added 16 points and
Julius Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) chipped in 14 points and seven rebounds.
Top Performances for NorthlandBrown finished with 18 points and nine rebounds. Maverick Harris had 14 points and Rijo Jackson had 10 points.
