APPLETON, Wis. (csssaints.com) -- On Saturday, the No. 15 St. Scholastica men's hockey team skated past Lawrence University (Wis.) 3-1 to claim both games of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) series.
Â
First Period BattleSt. Scholastica took an early lead of 1-0 on a goal scored by
Derek Sutliffe (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School (Langley Rivermen-BCHL) ), assisted by
Josh Hansen (Chilliwack, British Columbia/Unity Christian School (Chilliwack-BCHL) ). Other than this goal, the first period was evenly matched, with nine shots on goal for CSS and eight for Lawrence.
Â
Late ScoringMuch of the scoring from both teams came in the later part of the game. 14 seconds into the third period, St. Scholastica's
Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ) scored on a power play. He was assisted from
Mark Whiteley (Surrey, British Columbia/Holy Cross HS (Marian University)) and
Keegan Bruce (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham HS (Weyburn-SJHL) ), to make the score 2-0. The period continued until the Vikings' Lane King was able to chip in a goal with one minute and 47 seconds left in the game, allowing Lawrence to cling on to some hope at 2-1. Lawrence pulled its goalie to hopefully induce a tie with just a minute left to go, but the Saints'
Connor Faupel (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Century HS (UW-Superior)) was able to intercept a Lawrence pass with 26 seconds left, scoring into the empty net unassisted to make the score 3-1.
Â
Physical GameWith 12 penalties throughout the course of the game, this showdown was extremely physical. Both teams received six penalties and the same amount of power plays. However, there was only one power play goal by the Saints and none for Lawrence.
Â
GoaltendingShots on goal were immensely close this game, as the Saints'
Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) had 28 and the Vikings' Mattias Soderqvist had 31.
Â
Up Next:St. Scholastica is scheduled to play against Aurora University (Ill.) for a two-game NCHA series at Mars Lakeview Arena next weekend.
