csssaints.com) – After shooting below 40 percent the last four games, the St. Scholastica men's basketball team got out of its shooting funk with a 103-76 victory at Crown College on Saturday in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action.
Ahead from the StartThe Saints never trailed in the contest as
Jake Naslund (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) scored the first five points and
Julius Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) followed with a 3-pointer to give CSS an 8-0 advantage two minutes in.
The Storm got the margin down to five midway thru the half, but St. Scholastica responded with an 8-0 run. Later in the half the Saints had a 9-0 run to take a 52-31 lead into halftime.
Complete GameThe Saints followed their 52-point first half with a 51-point second half. CSS drained 5, 3-point field goals in each half to finish with 10 for the game. The Saints shot 53 percent from the floor in the first half and 57 percent in the second half. St. Scholastica also shot a season-best 83 percent from the free throw line (19-of-23). The Saints had a season-best 25 assists and tied a season-low with eight turnovers. CSS out-scored Crown 52-20 in the paint.
All 17 Saints who made the trip saw action in the contest. The margin in the second half got as high as 31 and never dropped below 20. A
Sam Thompson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) bucket gave the Saints 100 points for the second time this season as the final wound up being 103-76.
Top Performances for CSSAndrew Laughlin (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) led the Saints in scoring for the fourth straight game with a season-high 20 points.
Brandon Newman (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) scored all 14 of his points in the first half. Johnson had 13 points, a team-high seven rebounds and a team-high six assists. Naslund also added 13 points.
Kory Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) had 12 points off the bench.
Top Performances for CrownJames Brown led all scorers with 27 points. Adam Lechelt had 11 points off the bench and Tom Messner added 10 points.
