Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Late Penalties Costly in Men's Hockey Loss to #15 MSOE

Notables
-CSS commits five penalties in final 5:09; MSOE had only two shot attempts in the third period prior to the CSS penalties
-Both teams combined for 19 penalties for 46 minutes
-CSS goes 0-for-6 on the power-play

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – No. 15 Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) scored the eventual game-winner on an empty net, shorthanded, after earlier regaining the lead with a 5-on-3 power-play goal with just three minutes remaining to defeat the St. Scholastica men's hockey team 3-2 on Saturday at Mars Lakeview Arena.

Late CSS Penalties
The Saints and Raiders would be tied 1-1 with six minutes to go in regulation. MSOE got its first goal with five minutes remaining in the first period and the Saints tied it on a Brandon Millin (Port Moody, British Columbia/Heritage Woods HS (Notre Dame Hounds-SJHL) ) goal 32 seconds into the third period. Steven Phee (Balzac, Alberta/George McDougall HS (Canmore-AJHL) ) had the assist.

With 5:09 left, St. Scholastica would be called for a pair of penalties as the Raiders went on the power-play with a two-man advantage. CSS appeared to be in the verge of killing the penalties when during a shift change a fourth CSS skater entered the ice and the Saints were called for another penalty.

MSOE regrouped and was able to capitalize off the ensuing face-off with seconds remaining on the original 5-on-3 power-play with an Omar Mullen goal with 3:13 left.

The Raiders were then called for a penalty with 1:55 left. However, instead of going on the power-play the Saints were still serving the too many skaters penalty. CSS decided to pull goaltender and go 5-on-4. Just as the Saints were leaving the box to start the 6-on-4 power-play, Clint Garris cleared the puck down the ice into the open net to make it 3-1.

Justin Krabben (Rocky Mountain House, Alberta/Hunting Hills HS (Canmore-AJHL) ) kept the drama going scoring with the extra attacker with 35 seconds left to make it 3-2. Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ) and Keegan Bruce (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham HS (Weyburn-SJHL) ) had the assists. The Saints would not get another shot off as the Raiders hung on 3-2.

Goaltending
Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) had 21 saves in the loss for the Saints. Nick Kohn had 20 saves to earn the win for MSOE (10-5-0, 5-5-0 NCHA).
