HOLLAND, Mich. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's soccer team continued its success at the Bergsma Memorial Tournament, hosted by Hope College, with a dominant 5-0 performance over Marian University (Ind.) on Saturday.
St. Scholastica came out firing against Marian, peppering goaltender Caleb Gmyrek with 19 shots in the first half alone. Three of those would find their way past the goalkeeper, all of which were unassisted.
Shawayne Folkes (Toronto, Ontario/Maxwell Heights) missed a shot wide at 17:07 in the first period, but would make up for it seconds later with an unassisted goal at 17:34. Folkes ended up scoring a pair of goals during the match, firing another one by Gmyrek just 10 minutes later for the Saints' third goal of the game, also his third of the season.
The second goal came by a successful penalty kick from
Tom Corcoran (Warrington, England/Great Sankey HS, Priestley College) during the 24
th minute. Corcoran has scored three goals all by penalty kick.
In the second half Marian head coach Mike Smith pulled Gymrek, switching him with Tyler Blattner in hopes to stop the bleeding. Gymrek ended the day with nine saves and three goals allowed.
The Saints continued to pressure the defensive game of the Knights throughout the duration of the game, putting away two more goals before the match was finished. The first came from a shot by
Jonny Winter (Healthfield, England/Healthfield Community College) from 10 yards out, assisted by
Jonny Harkin (Studley, England/St. Benedicts School) in the 75
th minute.
The second came near the end of the game when
Trygve Rennan (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) got one past Marian goaltender for his first collegiate goal, thanks to an assist from
Luke Buckton (Beth, England/Writhlington School).
The Knights of Marian were proved to be outmatched on both ends of the field, only managing a total of three shots on goal throughout the entire match, all of which were saved by St. Scholastica goalkeeper
Sandy Davidson-Hunt (Kenora, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas), who recorded his first collegiate shutout.
