MORRIS, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team split a doubleheader Saturday at the University of Minnesota Morris winning game one 6-3, but falling in game two 12-9.
Game 1: CSS 6, Minnesota Morris 3 The Saints rallied from a 3-1 deficit after five innings to defeat the Cougars 6-3.
After Morris had a RBI double in the third inning, the Saints tied it in the fourth when
Chris Olson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS ) scored off a Morris error.
The Cougars added two runs in the bottom frame to take a 3-1 lead. In the sixth inning,
Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) had a bases loaded single, scoring two to tie the game at 3-3.
Brian Minks (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS ) gave the Saints their first lead in the seventh with a single to plate
Trevor Bernsdorf (Meadowlands, Minn./Floodwood HS (Doane) ).
Bernsdorf and Olson added RBIs in the eighth to give the Saints some insurance and a 6-3 lead.
Jake Turner (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS ) pitched the final four scoreless innings to earn his first collegiate win. Turner struck out three and allowed only two hits.
Jordan Risse (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington HS ) had the start for the Saints and struck out four in the no decision.
Olson was 4-for-4 to lead CSS' 14-hit attack. A. Colvard was 3-for-6 with a pair of RBIs.
Game 2: Minnesota Morris 12, CSS 9 The Saints defense let down in the game two loss, falling 12-9 in the nightcap.
CSS scored runs in each of the first three innings and led 5-2. However, a St. Scholastica error prolonged the fourth inning, which allowed three Morris runs to score and tie the game at 5-5.
The Saints regained the lead in the fifth with a pair runs and then Minks scored on a fielding error in the sixth to take an 8-5 lead.
However in the bottom frame of the sixth, the Cougars scored five runs with two outs to take a 10-8 lead. Morris added two more runs in the seventh again with two outs to make it 12-8.
CSS had the bases loaded with one out in the eighth when
Steven Neutzling (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral ) was hit by a pitch to force in a run to make the score 12-9. However, a double play then ended the inning.
The Saints had the bases loaded again with one out in the ninth, but another double play would end the game.
Bernsdorf was 3-for-4 to pace the CSS offense. The Saints out-hit the Cougars 13-12 for the game, but committed four errors.
Zack Farmer (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) had the loss in relief for the Saints.
The Saints (14-7, 6-1 UMAC) will be in Ashland, Wisconsin on Tuesday for a doubleheader against Northland College. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
