NEW ULM, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team completed the weekend sweep of Martin Luther College defeating the Knights 11-1 in seven innings of action Saturday.

The Saints opened the scoring with back to back RBIs by Trevor Bernsdorf (Meadowlands, Minn./Floodwood HS (Doane) ) and Tyler Duex (Bloomer, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS (UW-Superior) ) in the first inning to take a quick 2-0 lead. Bernsdorf's RBI came on a triple that scored Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) for the first run, and Duex followed up with a sacrifice fly that plated Bernsdorf.

CSS and Martin Luther would trade runs in the third inning to make the score 3-1 going into the fourth. That is when the Saints seized the momentum in a six run fourth inning to take a commanding 9-1 lead.

Colvard got the scoring started in the fourth inning with a 2 RBI single that scored Jordan Risse (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington HS ) and Jake Kuschke (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS ) for the first two runs of the inning. Bernsdorf and Steven Neutzling (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral ) would drive in a run apiece for the third and fourth runs of the inning, and Chris Olson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS ) capped the inning with a 2 RBI single of his own to end the inning with the Saints up 9-1.

The Saints would add an unearned run in the fifth inning to go up 10-1, and another in the seventh on a Shayne Ciernia (Eagan, Minn./Breck HS ) sacrifice fly to make the score 11-1 and implement the mercy rule in a seven inning victory over Martin Luther.

Bernsdorf and Olson each finished the day with two hits while Daniel Wood (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS ) improved to 6-0 throwing five innings giving up three hits and one unearned run on the day.

CSS (23-8, 14-1 UMAC) will next be in action when they travel to Collegeville, Minnesota to take on Saint John's University in a non-conference game with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. Catch the exciting Saints baseball action live at Saints Sports Net.
