NEW ULM, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team won both games of its Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) doubleheader matchup against Martin Luther College on Friday afternoon by scores of 13-1 in the first game and 8-4 in the second game.
Game 1- CSS 13, Martin Luther 1 (F/7) The Saints had their bats working in the first game of the doubleheader against Martin Luther College on Friday afternoon collecting 18 total hits over seven innings.
CSS put four runs across in the first inning. With one out in the inning
Al Marolt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) and
Trevor Bernsdorf (Meadowlands, Minn./Floodwood HS (Doane) ) drew walks to put runners on first and second for
Tyler Duex (Bloomer, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS (UW-Superior) ) who doubled to center scoring two. Then
Steven Neutzling (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral ) and
Brian Minks (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS ) each hit RBI doubles to make it 4-0.
The Knights kept CSS off the scoreboard in the second inning but St. Scholastica would come back with a five-run third inning. Bernsdorf started things off by driving a pitch into the gap between the left fielder and center fielder for a double. Then after
Tyler Duex (Bloomer, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS (UW-Superior) ) was hit by a pitch, Duex and Bernsdorf pulled off a double steal to put runners on second and third.
Shayne Ciernia (Eagan, Minn./Breck HS ) and
Jake Kuschke (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS ) each hit RBI singles and
Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) capped the scoring off with a two-run double bringing the score to 9-0.
St. Scholastica added two more runs in the fourth inning on a
Brian Minks (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS ) home run to make it 11-0.
In the bottom of the fourth inning Jason Lindemann drove in the only run of the day for the Knights with a solo home run to left field.
Al Marolt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) singled home a run in the sixth inning for the Saints and then Sam Christoffenson hit a solo home run in the seventh inning bringing the final score to 13-1.
Padraic Getchell (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS (North Dakota) ) earned his third victory of the year for CSS allowing only one run and three hits over five innings and striking out seven.
Josh Brodersen (Vulcan, Mich./Norway HS ) pitched the final two frames for CSS striking out one and holding Martin Luther to just three hits. Neither Saints pitcher issued a walk in the game.
Wyatt Weimer took the mound for Martin Luther pitching three innings and giving up nine earned runs and 10 hits. Michael Schlottman took over for Weimer to start the fourth inning allowing two earned runs and eight hits.
Game 2- CSS 8, Martin Luther 4 The Knights struck first in game two of the doubleheader taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Matt Olson hit a one out triple and then Lindemann brought him home with a sacrifice fly.
The game would remain 1-0 until the sixth inning when the Saints got on the scoreboard putting four runs across.
Brian Minks (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS ) brought Bernsdorf home from first with an RBI triple to tie the game at 1-1. Then Neutzling gave St. Scholastica its first lead of the day with a RBI single.
Tyler Duex (Bloomer, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS (UW-Superior) ) drew a walk advancing Neutzling to second and came around to score after an error by the shortstop allowed
Michael Grove (Edina, Minn./Edina HS ) to reach first. The Saints scored their final run of the inning after a passed ball allowed Duex to come home making the score 4-1.
Steven Neutzling (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral ) hit an RBI double in the top of the seventh for CSS but Martin Luther would answer back in the bottom of the inning with a Matt Olson RBI single.
St. Scholastica scored three times in the eighth inning.

Brian Minks (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS ) single to give the Saints an 8-2 lead.
Martin Luther College pushed two runs across in the eighth inning. With two outs and runners on second and third, Tom Keller hit a RBI single and a second run would come across on a throwing error bringing the final score to 8-4.
Ethan Roeseler gave up two earned runs and four hits over 5.1 innings for MLC. James Hemmelman pitched 2.2 innings of relief giving up four earned runs on six hits. John Hemmelman pitched the final inning for the Knights.
Mickie Keuning (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Angelo State)) got the start for the Saints going 6.1 innings while giving up just two earned runs and striking out four.
Grant Rindal (Superior, Wis./Superior HS ) gave up an earned run and three hits in 1.2 innings of relief and
Jesse Heaton (Heyworth, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic HS ) pitched the final inning for CSS.
The Saints will complete their weekend series with Martin Luther College on Saturday at MLC Baseball Field with a 10 a.m. start time.
