ST. PAUL (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team split a doubleheader with regional rival and No. 10-ranked University of St. Thomas on Sunday, taking game one 9-2, but falling in game two 12-3.
Game 1: CSS 9, St. Thomas 2 The Saints used an eight-run top of the first inning to put the Tommies away early.
Tyler Duex (Bloomer, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS (UW-Superior) ) got the run parade started with a two-run triple.
Steven Neutzling (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral ) followed with a RBI single. A few batters later
Padraic Getchell (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS (North Dakota) ) brought in two more runs with a base hit.
Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) then had a two-run double and
Trevor Bernsdorf (Meadowlands, Minn./Floodwood HS (Doane) ) had a RBI single to complete the scoring.
After St. Thomas got an unearned run in the bottom of the first, CSS got that run back in the third with a
Brian Minks (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS ) RBI single.
Daniel Wood (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS ) got the start for the Saints and got out of bases loaded jams in the first and sixth innings. He would allow only his third earned run of the year, but picked up his fifth victory, scattering eight hits.
The Saints had 13 hits with everyone in the lineup getting a hit. A. Colvard was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Game 2: St. Thomas 12, CSS 3 The Tommies put game two away with a seven-run sixth inning.
After the Saints got out of a base loaded, no outs situation in the second inning, they would not get out of the third inning unscathed. St. Thomas scored five in the inning, including four off a grand slam home run by Ben Waltz.
St. Scholastica cut the margin to 5-3 in the fifth when
Jordan Risse (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington HS ) belted a three-run home run.
In the sixth inning, the Tommies (16-8) had two runners on with two outs when the windy conditions caused a misplay in the outfield resulting in an inside-the-park home run. A RBI triple and a pair of CSS errors followed as the Tommies put the game away with seven runs coming across to make the final 12-3.
Getchell picked up the loss for the Saints, striking out five in five innings. The Saints had just five hits in game two, by five different players.
The Saints (18-8) will be in Ashland, Wisconsin on Tuesday for a makeup doubleheader against Northland College. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
