Notables-Wood threw his first career complete game in the Penn State-Behrend victory-A. Colvard extended his hitting streak to 10 games and on-base streak to 21 games-CSS did not allow an earned run in its loss to La Roche, committed four errors
FORT PIERCE, Fla. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team was on both ends of 3-1 scores on Sunday in its first action of the 2015 season.
CSS 3, Penn State-Behrend 1 Junior
Daniel Wood (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS ) pitched a complete game as the Saints won its season opener 3-1 over Penn State-Behrend.
The Lions would strand a runner at third in the bottom of the first and the bases loaded in the second. The Saints got things rolling in the fourth with a pair of runs coming with two outs. Freshmen
Steven Neutzling (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral ) brought in two runs with single to right to make it 2-0.
With the score still 2-0 in the sixth; it was Neutzling again driving
Brian Minks (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS ) with a RBI single to extend the lead to 3-0.
After early inning troubles, Wood settled in for the Saints allowing just one hit from the fourth thru the eighth innings. Back-to-back Lion hits in the ninth, paired with a CSS error got a run across to make it 3-1. Wood got the next batter to ground into a double play. After a Penn State hit, Wood got the final batter to ground out to complete his first collegiate complete game victory by a score of 3-1.
Wood scattered eight hits, struck out two and only walked one in the victory.
Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) was 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the CSS offense. Minks and Neutzling added a pair of hits. Both teams finished with eight hits total.
La Roche 3, CSS 1 Errors haunted the Saints in their 3-1 loss to La Roche College (Pa.) to finish the day as they did not give up a single earned run. The Red Hawks are just outside the D3baseball.com poll and was a NCAA Tournament team last season.
La Roche got its first run off a CSS error in the third to make it 1-0. CSS appeared to have tied the game in the fifth inning when
Chris Olson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS ) scored on a
Jake Kuschke (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS ) sacrifice fly. However, Olson would be called out on an appeal for leaving early.
The Red Hawks added their second run in the seventh, thanks to a CSS error that prolonged the inning. A pair of St. Scholastica errors in the eighth got another La Roche run across to make it 3-0.
Olson led off the top of the ninth with a double and would eventually score to make it 3-1. The Saints had the leading run at the plate in the inning, but a ground out ended it.
Jordan Risse (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington HS ) allowed only four hits in 6.2 innings, but picked up the loss. CSS out-hit La Roche 8-7 for the game. A pair of freshmen led CSS at the plate with Olson and
Drew Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS ) picking up a pair of hits.
The Saints (1-1) will face Bridgewater State University (Mass.) in a doubleheader tomorrow with the first game beginning at 3 p.m. (ET). Listen to the action live on Saints Sports Net.
