WHITEWATER, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team was swept in a doubleheader by the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Monday, dropping game one 4-0 and game two 4-1.

Game 1: CSS 0, UW-Whitewater 4

The Saints and Warhawks were scoreless until the bottom of the eighth inning when a two-run triple was followed up by a two-run home run, which gave Whitewater the 4-0 victory.

CSS starter Padraic Getchell (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS (North Dakota) ) pitched well for the Saints going 7.1 innings, striking out four and allowing just five hits. However, he takes the hard-luck loss.

The Saints had chances to go up on the Warhawks as they had the bases loaded with no outs in the second, but a force out at the plate, a strikeout and another force out ended the threat. In the seventh, the Saints had runners at first and second with no outs, but once again failed to move the runners.

Whitewater started the bottom of the eighth with back-to-back walks and then Mikole Pierce ripped a bases-clearing triple. That was followed up by a Casey Power two-run home run.

The Saints loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the ninth, but a line out to center ended the game.

CSS finished with six hits in the game, while Whitewater had seven hits. Trevor Bernsdorf (Meadowlands, Minn./Floodwood HS (Doane) ) and Jordan Risse (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington HS ) each had a pair of hits.

Game 2: CSS 1, UW-Whitewater 4

The Saints were able to get on the board first in this one, but the Warhawks scored three runs in the sixth and seventh innings to complete the doubleheader sweep 4-1.

CSS got its first run of the day on a RBI double by Bernsdorf in the top of the first. The Warhawks responded in the bottom frame with a RBI single by Power.

It remained 1-1 until the bottom of the sixth when Whitewater got a RBI single and RBI groundout to take a 3-1 lead. The Warhawks added another run in the seventh, scoring off a CSS error. The Saints would not get another batter on base the rest of the way to make the final 4-1.

Gino Strebing (Tucson, Ariz./Santa Rita HS (Rainy River CC) ) went 5.1 innings and allowed eight hits in the loss for the Saints. Jake Turner (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS ) pitched the final 2.2 innings. Colin Grove improved to 3-0 for Whitewater striking out six. CSS managed only five hits with pair coming from Jake Kuschke (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS ).

The Saints (11-6, 3-0 UMAC) return to Wade Stadium and conference play tomorrow when they host Northland College at 4 p.m. If you can't make it out, the game can be seen live on Saints Sports Net.
