DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team improved to 4-0 in conference play after taking down Northland College by a score of 11-2 Tuesday at Wade Stadium.

The Saints stepped on the gas pedal rather quickly as they put up five runs in the first two innings. The five runs started with Steven Neutzling (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral ) doubling to left center, scoring Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) for the first run of the game. Brian Minks (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS ) followed up with a RBI of his own to bring home Neutzling before the first inning was over.

Northland picked up a run in the second, but the Saints made them pay by scoring three of their own in the bottom half. Padraic Getchell (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS (North Dakota) ), Colvard and Neutzling all picked up RBIs in the bottom half of the second.

Things started to settle down for a few innings, as the Saints scored an additional two runs over the next four innings, while the LumberJacks scored one. The end of the seventh inning would be the stopping point for starter Daniel Wood (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS ), who would pick up the win and improve his record to 4-0 on the year. Wood ended the day with three strikeouts, two walks, five hits against, and two earned runs.

The bottom of the seventh was where the Saints struck the final blow, as they piled on four runs to make sure Northland had no way back into the game. The highlight of the scoring affair was Al Marolt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS)'s triple that cleared the bases, giving him four RBIs on the night.

The game was finished by Jacob Dzubay (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS (Butler) ), who pitched two hitless innings to close out the win. Minks, Marolt, and Jake Kuschke (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS ) led the Saints with three hits each, while the LumberJacks were led by shortstop Matt Lennon, who tallied a RBI of his own. The loss was handed to Kyle Strom, who falls to 2-3 on the year for Northland. Northland is now 7-13 on the year, while the Saints improve to 12-6.

Up next for the Saints is three games at the University of Minnesota Morris with one Friday at 3 p.m. and then the next two on Saturday starting at noon.
