FORT PIERCE, Fla. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team scored 12 runs between the third and fourth innings to defeat La Roche College (Pa.) 17-10 on Tuesday.
The CSS offense got off to a rough start with the first seven batters striking out. The second time through the order would be different story.
The Red Hawks led 4-0 after two and a half innings thanks to a pair of CSS errors. With two runners on and two outs in the bottom of the third, the Saints offense got going.
Steven Neutzling (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral ) had a RBI single to drive in
Al Marolt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS).
Brian Minks (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS ) followed with another RBI single to plate
Padraic Getchell (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS (North Dakota) ).
Jordan Risse (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington HS ) then belted a three-run home run over the center field wall to give the Saints a 5-4 lead.
La Roche answered with a solo home run in the fourth to tie the game at 5-5. St. Scholastica responded in the bottom frame with seven runs on six hits. Getchell and
Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) had RBIs. Neutzling had a two-run triple and later scored on a La Roche error. Risse and
Trevor Bernsdorf (Meadowlands, Minn./Floodwood HS (Doane) ) also had RBI singles in the inning as the Saints led 12-5.
The Red Hawks stayed in it by putting up a four-spot in the top of the sixth to cut the CSS lead to 12-9. CSS got one run back in the bottom of the sixth when Minks scored on a La Roche error.
The Saints added to their lead in the bottom of the seventh when Getchell had a RBI single and later scored on another La Roche error. Minks later had a RBI double in the inning to make it 16-9.
After the Red Hawks got one run in the top of the eighth, Bernsdorf led off the bottom half of the inning with a home run to left to make the final 17-10.
In his first start as a Saint, junior transfer
Gino Strebing (Tucson, Ariz./Santa Rita HS (Rainy River CC) ) went five innings, striking out five and allowed one earned run to earn the win. Risse finished with three hits and four RBIs. Neutzling also had three hits and three RBIs. Getchell had three hits and drove in two.
The Saints (4-1) will have Wednesday off before playing La Roche in a rubber match on Thursday. That game is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. (ET) and can be heard live on Saints Sports Net.
